QSI decoder programmer ruined my QSI Titan decoder

Hi,

Another weekend of total frustration. Last week I posted my problem with my QSI 10 amp Titan decoder where I accidently touched a wire from the smoke unit onto the decoder causing the sound to drop to about 10% and will not return. I emailed QSI twice and facebooked them and no reply, great customer support eh!! Anyway I bought the QSI programmer to see if I reprogrammed the firmware the sound my reset. Setting up the programmer was fairly simple, updated all the drivers from the QSI website. As this decoder is the ET Q3 version I wanted to upgrade the sound to the 1132-567 EMD Q3 file. I placed my GP9 on the program track and read the decoder information and it read back. I found the Q3 sound file I wanted and downloaded onto the decoder. Nearly an hour passed to update the firmware and on completion it come up with an error message, I couldn't believe it. I then went to the read decoder information and it read, Unable to read Mfg.ID, a Status = 1 I looked at the manual and it briefly explained to make sure track and wheels are clean and to read again. I did, you guessed it, same message. The manual gives you no further options. I placed the loco on the power track and nothing, absolutely nothing. It seems the firmware has gone. I placed the loco back on the QSI program track and tried to reload the original 1001-400 sound file and it won't let me because the loco can't be read. I cannot even reset the decoder. So in one week I have managed to lose most of the sound and now lost the software on the decoder. How can this go wrong, all I'm doing is downloading files off the QSI website onto a QSI decoder. I am absolutely fed up with QSI, there decoders promise so much with so many features but try programming them. If the file you're downloading doesn't work then that should not render the decoder useless with no way or advice on how to rectify. As I said QSI support is non existent and offer nothing. Avoid QSI unless you're considering suicide.

Cheers

Steve

Wow, that's a sad story. This kind of failure used to be quite common in the computer world and still happens to people with GPS. Firmware update fails and the unit is 'bricked'.

I suggest you take a deep breath and phone QSI. Politely explain your problems and ask for help. Hopefully, they will get you to send it back to them. They should at least be able to re-load the firmware with the latest version, as well as your desired sound. If the amp is blown, attaching a small amplifier will help you.

Good luck and keep us posted.

Accidentally or not, any money you like this was the root cause of the problem.

Probably is the root of the problem mate but when I buy a product I expect customer support when accidents do happen. Without any support from QSI I'm left to spend more money to try and solve the issue myself. Having tried this the decoder is now unreadable.

Thanks for you're advice, very helpful

I would have thought that it would be a good idea to resolve the original problem before embarking on other possible fixes.
To me that would mean continuously and loudly complaining to QSI (as in bombarding) to get something done.
Try MLS or LSC as at least you might get the attention of Greg Elmassian.

I am sorry to hear all this, its a damn shame but I think Tony has a point. You tried to reprogram a faulty decoder. A decoder has not got much memory so any amendment will over write whats there. Quite possibly, the existing fault corrupted this over write and you now have a program with a bit missing.
As said above - I would get on to your supplier or QSI direct and push hard (but politely). Purely by saying you have discussed this online with your forum colleagues may be enough to kick them into action. No one wants bad press.

Steve has emailed me privately, so we're making progress.

It does appear that some of the outputs of the decoder are damaged.

But the inability to program problem can occur and there are some workarounds. I've made some suggestions.

It will be up to Steve if he wants to continue here or on email.... I don't frequent this forum too often, but I've got a lot of experience with the Titan (as well as about 25 of them).

Well done Greg, even if we dont really know you well.

Hi lads,

Greg again thank you for taking the time to reply to my email.

I have emailed QSI three times with no reply and called them and left a message, again no reply. So poor. The thing is I read QSI return policy and I might be entitled to a free replacement even with accidental damage. It states not to just send the decoder back to them without first obtaining a RMA number. Well how the hell are you supposed to get that when they don't respond. The decoder is all packed up and ready to go but cannot post back.

Not sure what else I can do apart from book a plane ticket to the states.

Cheers

Steve

Steve, I went to the QSI web site ( http://www.qsisolutions.com/ ) and found the following notice:
>>>
IMPORTANT NOTE: Email Problems. Resolved!

We are pleased to announce that the Email conflicts have been resolved! However, in the process the old email addresses became non-useable. Please note, the new addresses are:

It appears that they have had some email issues. Is one of these the email address that you used? Since I just checked their web site, I don't know when the notice was posted. I would suggest that you try once again to send an email to them from their web site ( http://www.qsisolutions.com/#!contact-us/cugo ) AND send a copy of the message through normal email channels.

Good luck!
