After a year without much activity on the railway because of other distractions, I decided, with the nice weather, to get the line back in running order.

I wonder if you could use one of those high pitched cat or dog scarers? Intercept the tunnel, and insert a suitably protected unit in the ground.
I've whacked a long piece of slate into the hole, see if that slows him down. If not I'll try your idea :)
