Punching clay uglier

A visit to Back2Bay6 yesterday resulted in me bringing home this little beauty from Steve's second hand cabinet.

Orrible ain't it? Apparently it was made from an American MTC kit. Someone suggested that it looked like a lump of cheese, but it bought to mind my former colleague who was born and bred in the Black Country. One of his favourite sayings was "yow couldn't punch clay uglier". Hence this new loco has been christened CLAY.
Steve sold me the loco on the understanding that it was a non-runner (hence it was cheap as chips), but that was OK as what I had in mind for Clay was that he would sit in my abandoned quarry in a desperately run down condition. You might remember that I actually made a loco for this purpose (Byg), but he has found use shunting loco coal tippers at Gooey loco shed.
Anyhoo, I thought I'd have a look at Clay's workings to see if he could be restored to running condition. Judging by the amount of fluff that fell out of the motor housing, he must have spent his life running on someone's carpet. Also, his gears were absolutely shot to bits, so his motor etc. have gone into the spares box.

First job was to make Clay look a little more quarry like. Those big air resevoirs (?), bell and headlights joined the electrics in the spares box. The cab roof was left with some bad marks, so a new skin was fitted from plasticard. The exhaust was re-built using aluminium tube - I know it's a bit on the big side (!!!), but I think it adds character. An air filter mounting was made from scrap plastic and a drawing pin to fit where the bell used to be.

Next came painting, first with Halfords plastic primer.

Then Plasticoat rattle cans - Lawn Green (didn't he used to be in Bonanza??) and satin black.

Notice how the colours were not masked from each other, but over-lap each other. This won't be noticable after the next bit.

Next came my favourite bit - the airbrushing - Tamiya acrylics NATO black (makes a change  ), dark grey and finally red brown. Here's how Clay looked on the bench while the paint dried.

I saw it too bout £50 wasnt it? Mel, lovely work as usual, do you know who manufactured the loco?
It has a fan right here :D
MTC so I've been told big man. They do come pretty cheap by all accounts, but it shows to be honest. I wouldn't be too confident on how it would work with track power, but it would make a decent battery conversion. Dead easy too .

Nice work as usual Mel:thumbup:

Mel, was it MTC or MDC for model diecast co,
I got a motor block by MDC ( USA) block is black plastic, top ends, slight down slope wheels in slots huge metal weight taking up most of the space & worm gears that eventually get loose on the shaft ( double ended ) Had to superglue mine
EDIT is that primer really pink?? haircurlers not too way out then :rolf:  :rolf:

Thanks all .

Don, I've no idea who made it, was just going on what someone posted in the coffee room. Anyhoo, your description of the motor block sounds just like the one I removed, so I'd imagine it may well be MDC.

As for the "pink" primer, well there ain't much evidence of it anymore - in fact there ain't much evidence of anything as it's now fast disappearing under a crust of Rust Dust. I'll try and post some pics when it's all dried out.

Edit - and having just done a Welsh translation the loco's name is now spelt Clai .

Having said I wasn't going to use any varnish - I did  , but only in the places where I wanted the REALLY cruddy rust (like the panel joins and other places that would gather water). Then the whole lot was sprinkled with Modeltown Rust Dust. It was then sprayed with vinegar using my old £5 airbrush and left for an hour for it to do it's magic. Next came an all-over airbrush with tap water.

When it was all dry, I cut out thin clear plasticard for the windows. The "glass" was cut away randomly, leaving just the edges. The whole thing was then covered with plastic cement and smudged between finger and thumb to represent smashed glass (you may have done this accidentaly with the cockpit canopy when making an Airfix aircraft kit?). The finished thing was then super glued into place.

I'm really chuffed with the way the cab roof turned out, gives a good impression of peeling paint - and rust of course . I had thought about detailing the cab, but I noticed how the floor formed a natural "sump", so I transplanted a nice lump of moss from my cultivated stock . Will need to give it the occasional watering. The chain cost 20p from a charity shop - it didn't look like this when I bought it (it's a good bag is that).

Finally, Cloddfa Pedr Quarrying Co. Ltd. No.1 BYG hauls CPQCo.Ltd. No.2 Clai plus one of the waste skips out of Gooey station.

Well done! Looks really well past its sell by date! Nice work.

Anybody want one? This one could be yours for $30 +shipping? I have a box somewhere with the rest of the detail bit's but I'd have to delve into the dark recesses of the shed!! And it runs...........Poorly.........
