Problem with starting new conversation

Seems like many companies do only limited testing these days and then expect the users of the apps to do the debugging for them by reporting faults / workarounds.
That's actually standard modus operandi in a silicon valley start-up. Saves hiring tester or QA and gets you to market much more rapidly. You just have to nimble when the clients start calling and yelling at you.

And now I know why I never got a reply to my 'conversation' starter.

I think the Millennium Bug was the most over-hyped, underwhelming world event ever.

People just used common sense, and where a programme couldn't accept the new millennium (and plenty couldn't) businesses had time to ditch it and replace it with something, usually, better
Well yes and no, for a small business yes the answer was to get some new upgrade say the next version of Windows or perhaps upgrade Word, Excel, Access etc. However for big business with large computer solutions, say car factories, Banks, Building societies any system dealing with lots of processes or money it was a big deal as the systems would not have functioned in any meaningful way once you start to input things with a date = or above 00. Thus the systems needed to be updated to a 4 figure year. Yes there was a lot of hype about planes falling out if the sky etc and it was indeed over hyped in that respect. But and the big but things did not go badly wrong on the 1/1/2000 because it was fixed and the costs with big systems were massive reflecting the reliance and process dependent on Computers.

A bigger issue is on the way but we will not see it 31/12/9999.

We still have control of proper spelling, and grammar, but editing or spell checking is seldom of importance, it seems...can't blame high tech for that...

I was always curious about the rumour that if your VCR only had 2-digit years in the date, you could overcome the millennium issues by setting the date to the equivalent in 1972 (I think it was 72 - memory not so good these days). Never fond anyone who could confirm / deny this but it was one of those things I rather hoped was true!

Yes,

it does work calandar wise - you need to go back a multiple of 4 years to be sure that your year has the correct number of days and you need a year that has the same starting weekday. The 1st of Jan 2000 and the first of Jan 1972 are both Saturdays so this would work assuming the vcr allows setting a date before it was manufactured.
