Portesfoote Bunting Railcar in G

This Way Up

This is one of two I'm building, this one inspired by the drawings of Peter Barnfields Portesfoote and Bunting Light Railway and another in 7/8ths scale that will follow the drawings and actually try to be a model of the P&BLR ones he draws.

So for the G scale version I started with one of the IP engineering shorty L&B style coaches and a LGB ICE power block.

Here's the basic body built as the instructions but I've modified on end by cutting out windows for the driver. It would get turned on a mini turntable so only needs them one end.

You can see my earlier O16.5 version here too

The radiator is built up from Evergreen strip and filed to shape

Paul,
That is nice looking work you are doing there.
Looking forward to photos of the completed model.
A very appealing little vehicle.

Its looking good - and it will have some power too!

Ahhh! Sepia Foliate in the spring... Great minds are thinking alike!
Mine is a bash from a Lehmann toy train coach. Using Essel chassis, for gauge changing.

Actually there are two on the go. Hopefully they'll run singly, or back to back, or with a coach or three between.

Funnily enough I've got two on the go as well Rob! er actually three if you count the O16.5 one ;) the 7/8ths one also has a LGB chassis courtesy of James. I'm currently toying with ideas for control and sound. I'm currently looking at the Cliff barker one for the big 7/8ths stuff with the mylocosound cards. The G one will probably have a S decoder as Camberwick is staying dcc.

Being principally a steam freak, I'm not comfortable with the small controllers, and prefer the conventional two stick RC systems.
Most of my TX's are shared between a steamie and one or two battery locos.
These railcars will share a Spektrum DX4 Tx with Orange Rx, and Electron 12 ESC (via Peter Spoerer).
I like the Viper ESC, but Essel motors do best on around 20V, so the larger ESC is needed.
Hopefully they will haul a few bogie coaches between them.

Progress has been a little slow of late due to a holiday and work but I've got some more details on, the footboards and the interior painted.
Project for this week is the roof. The IP kit supplies a plastic roofbut I'm going to use individual wood planks, I was going to use coffee stirrers but they are a fraction too short so I had to go with buying some! ;)

Well it's getting nearer to the end :)
Made up the roof today, cut to length and taped together

Profiles to locate it cut using the ends of the railcar as templates. The planks will be glued along the seams too then covered in tissue to represent the canvas. Then the roof garden will reinforce the whole lot.

Still needs a lot of the detail and the exhaust adding.

Love it! Great inspiration for me, as I have a very long term intention to produce something similar, rather like this example from the defunct Tortosa-La Cava line. There was a restoration project announced for this a couple of years ago, including the rebuilding of short length of the line over the original trackbed, and though I believe the track materials and railcar engine have been secured, the Spanish recession seems to have put the project on hold. A bit like me, really, I have the motor block and the grand idea, but have too much else to be getting on with!

A fascinating build with some really nice detailing. I like it!
Now what does the prototype remind me of?

You've certainly bestowed them with the Chigley look. Nice sculpting!

Been invited to a 32mm garden line so I decided to modify a chassis kit I had for 45mm to provide a 32mm chassis for the Railcar.
The chassis was by busted bricks, which are now with someone else, and a simple slot together mdf frame. Beautifully simple and accurate it only took an hour to build and wire up the batteries plus add the included switch. I then made up mounting brackets and bingo an alternative chassis to swap between gauges :)image.jpg
