Pipe car,latest addition to the freight fleet,WIP

I purchased a couple of cheap used cars from GRS a few weeks ago for a couple of new bashes and as not too sure of their condition until they arrived to see what could be done with them. It turned out that the hopper car was beyond restoration but the trucks grab rails and so on were useable so the body went into the recycle bin,the second car, a flat car was fine so what to do with them, I decided on a pipe gondola and an idler car( 2nd one will be needed at some point) so the chassis cut up with a razor saw for some use later, the first job was to build a chassis frame from heavy styrene strip and brass rod adding some brake and pipe detail with a few bolt moldings for good measure, body then made from 80thou sheet with styrene strip for the metal bracing and I used the cut up main frame from the hopper car as "bed plates" for the pipes to sit on. I used some 20mm electrical conduit for the pipe load,still a few little jobs to do before paint goes on and the idler car to sort, I thought it would be something just a little different.

Taking my time on this one and is still a WIP but only really the cut bar chains to add when the chain arrives that's on order and then tone with some body paint. The body, chassis and trucks all painted out with the red brown body colour together with the front and rear of the wheels, lettering added and varnished with a colour wash to fade it all back, the pipe load was superglued into the required positions and a coat of dirty matt varnish to take off the shine but the load is and will be removable so some pics on the build so far, now to start the idler cars, well at least one at the moment.

Very good, you probably now need another 20 or so to represent the end days of the NG in Colorado hauling pipes to or was it from Farmington.

Yes Jon, 20 cars would be good but sticking with 2 !!!! With the flat cars and a caboose and with possibly a few tank cars added it should at least make up an oil train of sorts. Farmington was the destination for the pipe trains on the NG
