Just stumbled on the Piko website and see that they've announced another big steamie for 2019 - a BR50 2-10-0 in DR livery.

What's interesting is that they've announced both analogue and dccsound versions, first time they've released an over-the-counter dccsound-fitted loco in G-Scale.

Due for delivery 10/2019, Euros 1350 for the sound version. Start saving your pennies!!
 
Oh yes, an update was also plublished today in the Spur G Blog

sounds impressive: length 86,5 cm, weight 3,8 kg, driven by 2 motors

Piko may have released some of their toy train models in the US in the distant past but for the European market modelling proper locomotives (albeit using a rubber rule at times) the BR50 is the first locomotive that is being sold with dcc and sound fitted in the factory.

Up until this announcement if you wanted sound in a proper European locomotive you had to fit the sound yourself or get somebody to do it for you.
 
distant past??? Very recently in the overall timeline, as Piko is a recent addition to the 1:29 market..... interesting it took so long to get to Europe when it was very shortly after their first US loco. I guess the head guy over here insisted on sound systems for the US market.

Looks like about 2013 it was here.
 
Prices seem to be creeping up. getting nearer to LGB every year!

Would you say the quality is also getting better?

They appear to have a better 'fidelity' to scale, than LGB, but still tweaked to suit the market.
To my eye, the detail seems a little crisper, then LGB, though the new-mould Marklin/LGB are also better in this respect.

Indeed, it looks to be totally scrumptious, even with a scale of 26.33 (?) If it was 22.5 scale, it would be even hugerer, at around 101.6cm..........You'd need a layout track radius fit to go into Hyde Park to run it.
