Options to avoid sharp corner, & steep grade ( Hind sight is wonderful)

Re: Options for avoiding a sharp corner, Also on a severe gradient ( Hind sight is wonderful)

A layer of sand was then laid over the bags

using the bags saves any sharp bits moving up thro the sand & puncturing the liner

And a thinner layer of sand can be use

Belts & braces
a layer of clean used bags was laid over the sand,
to further protect the liner

Re: Options for avoiding a sharp corner, Also on a severe gradient ( Hind sight is wonderful)

From past experience when you put water into a liner the edges get dragged as the water settles it into place

If you have a pond with inclined sides, you can line the sides with sand

so no problem

But as I want vertical sides even wet sand wont stay in place

So there is danger of a thin liner tearing

So belts & braces again

I cut up some jumbo bags that sand comes in ( the tonne size)

And used a strip of that to protect the sides

Then fit liner, & fill with water to check

when settled down, just 1 inch to spare, whew

Re: Options for avoiding a sharp corner, Also on a severe gradient ( Hind sight is wonderful)

drained water, & as I will be walking over the liner to do cosmetic landscaping,

the liner was covered with some new cloth that was supposed to be a bargain but never got used as its very gaudy

Then over that, some heavy duty rubber mat, ex minibus, was laid,

The idea of the cloth is that invariably some sand gets between the liner & the rubber
& the cloth reduces any piercing

Then some mortar was mixed & the walling castings fixed in place, as these are against plastic & so not a good adhesion

a fillet was put along the bottom edge & down each end

And then a layer of mortar was used to shape the base of the weir

when this first layer is dry, some gravel & cobbles will be fixed in a second layer

Re: Options for avoiding a sharp corner, Also on a severe gradient ( Hind sight is wonderful)

All the plastics were trimmed down to 1/2 inch below the top of the side wall,

this then allows more mortar to sit in the top in the rebate along the top of the walls as seen in a previous post

thus strengthening the adhesion of the wall plates

Now that this first coat of mortar is on the slope & holding down the liner from the top 'lake',
the weir can be seen to

Replanted some cupressus cuttings alongside back wall of canal basin

Re: Options for avoiding a sharp corner, Also on a severe gradient ( Hind sight is wonderful)

The cupressus were moved from here in the foreground by the new bridge site

In order that I could put some new alpines in their place, gets more sun here

View of cupressus from water level.
will be difficult to get same view when basin is full of water!!

Been doing a bit to the final bridge,

Thats not the final shape, as I am not sure wether to have a curved bridge or a dog leg

Re: Options for avoiding a sharp corner, Also on a severe gradient ( Hind sight is wonderful)

Used mortar to the shape of the wood to line it up

But MUST remember not to move it for 3-4 days till it set off properly or it will flake around the edges

Done another couple of bits of side walling to the canal basin

Put up a wing wall on the right here to constrain water from the weir

Added a few more rocks here around the alpines, not happy with the result You may notice some new plants have arrived top left

Re: Options for avoiding a sharp corner, Also on a severe gradient ( Hind sight is wonderful)

Its not structured enough, too bitty

clitter along track edge needs to be smaller bits

"How many tracks did you intend to fit in here and does the plan include a run-round?"
Dons reply
The canal basin sidings could end up looking like this

Re: Options for avoiding a sharp corner, Also on a severe gradient ( Hind sight is wonderful)

But there may be a slight variation,

I may bring the first point just outside the bridge by the canal tunnel so I can send a train into the different sidings without lifting the bridge

"Destination routing" rather than "shunting maneuvers"

No remote point control (no track power)

Altghough with the 2.4 ghrtz? system radio control is a possibility

Re: Options for avoiding a sharp corner, Also on a severe gradient ( Hind sight is wonderful)

Done this bit,
will end up as rough stone,
possibly with steps down to the water for leaisure sailors small boats
