Operating point with cable system

Many thanks to all contributors. I got lots of very helpful ideas and hints. I have now fitted a cable system to 2 points on my railway. I bought brake cable (inner and outer) from Ebay for £1.99. Fitted a small piece of wood next to the point and then used an L shaped bracket screwed in place on the wood. Bought some cable clips and secured the cable along the track. Now works well on a push/pull system and I am really pleased with it. It was a bit difficult getting the bracket in the correct place but I got there by trial and error. The first point I did was in an difficult place behind a tree so that added to the problem. Got there in the end and both points are working fine. Covered the mechanism up with microwave containers from the £ shop, painted black.

Thanks again for all the helpful advice. Couldn't have managed it without this forum.

Kind regards,

Dave

How about some photographs.... ?

Hi All,

Herewith two photos of my new cable switch point. I haven't manage to insert a lever at the other end. Works quite well so will probably leave it as a push/pull mechanism.

Kind regards,

Dave

If it were me I'd have fitted the cable to the other arm of the L and connected the point tie-bar to the arm which runs parallel to the rails. That way the tie-bar would be push/pulled more efficiently, and the brake cable wouldn't have a bend where it exits the sleeve.

I'd have also fitted a motor, but if it works for you Dave?

Well done....

I just know I will regret asking this...

Does anyone know if there is a source of 1:24 (or even 1:32, G1) point rodding components etc.?

Ingenuity - love it

That's what made people like IKB great :clap::clap::clap:

Thank you.. I'm think! ;)
Those 10mm Point Rodding Guides would be simpe to make if you have a mind. Small bits of Flat Brass and Tubing with Brass Rodding. But would work out quire expensive if KS parts used, better to get larger lengthf from an Engineering or Model Aircraft Supplier if you have one.

I've recently decided to move to battery power, and want to also move away from electric point motors - lots of reasons, detailed in other threads.

I was search through the site to find something like this, and the info is great. I'm thinking of using either brake cable, or fishing line in tube just for my station area - other points at loops can be sprung.

Does anyone make lever frame to which I could hook up the cable/wire? The idea to have a sort of signal box on a pole, overlooking the station!
