We've probably all done it at least once. Had a train get stuck and put divots in the rail.

They say there's a prototype for everything.... even this, it seems.

First thought: "Bulleid woz 'ere". Second thought - had a problem on the HO layout with a siding that sloped away from the buffer stop enough to roll wagons down to foul the turnout. A friend suggested filing out divots to hold a wagon at the top of the siding. Nice to know there's a prototype!

I nearly did that with the rail cleaner when it's coupling caught on a track contact.
That must have taken some serious wheelspin to grind the rails that much! Blue Peter at Durham comes to mind

Maybe that the brakes were stuck on the other bogie, but not on the wheel-sets that caused this damage....

had exactly the same happen to me yesterday....
Train going fine whilst im watching it... go in to make a coffee and a coupling gets stuck on a platform and hey-presto 2 sets of 4 "divvots" in the track, but nowhere near as bad as the picture!!

It may have been an R/C helper that lost contact with the head loco.
Head loco stopped but helper carried on.......just a guess....don't know for sure.

according to the note with the file, yes the R/C glitched. Think it will buff out?

Think of the crazy amount of heat required to melt the rail head like that, just through the friction of the wheel turning on it. Must have been fun trying to actually get the loco out of those ruts too, as they would act like wheel chocks.
