If totally scratch building a loco, or rolling stock, would you rather see wheels made from brass or steel (or other material)?

I ask, coz I might. (might have to learn some of that CAD stuff as well . . . . Ooh Errr Missus!!!)

I have used mild steel - both round and flat - but I prefer plated metal if poss. I should imagine brass will be expensive.

Mick, Is that because it transfers electricery better? I'm currently thinking live steam . That small amount of brass wouldn't be too bad price wise, Might already have such in stock as flat.

Yes, plated is a far better conductor I think. However, mild steel is OK for rolling stock that does not involve electrical pick-up.
I did buy some aluminium bar stock and turned some wheels to replace plastic wheelsets.

When I had the idea to make driving wheels out of ali, I shrunk some copper tyres on - but that was as far as I got. Brass is a good medium to plate (as is copper) but I haven't pursued it.

I did toy with the idea of turning wheels from MS tube and castin resin centres but haven't pursued that road either. Another Round tu-it!

I'm sure all of those could be got to work.
