Yes, plated is a far better conductor I think. However, mild steel is OK for rolling stock that does not involve electrical pick-up.
I did buy some aluminium bar stock and turned some wheels to replace plastic wheelsets.
When I had the idea to make driving wheels out of ali, I shrunk some copper tyres on - but that was as far as I got. Brass is a good medium to plate (as is copper) but I haven't pursued it.
I did toy with the idea of turning wheels from MS tube and castin resin centres but haven't pursued that road either. Another Round tu-it!
