My father just passed and has this live steam locomotive he was rebuilding. I have no clue where to start or even who makes it. I know it`s a 0-4-0, has a baldwin name plate on the boiler front, and is butane fired. I`ve included some pics. Can anyone determine what i got here, and best way to start rebuild? Thank you much.20140304_204649.jpg20140304_205136.jpg

WJ, gas fired for most gauges is not uncommon in your part of the world (fire safety reasons, mostly). My best suggestion would be for you to join a local Model Engineering Society (Google will help) and ask best advise from there, as they will have experience of these things.

It looks to me to be one of the larger scales like 5" or even 7 1/2", but more than that is difficult from the photos alone. If you use your tape and measure the inside width of the rails it is standing on that will get the correct gauge.

It looks a useful beast and probably able to pull quite a decent train.

Edit: - 7 1/2" might be 7 1/4", though that is more common in the east of USA

If it is a Larger Gauge 7 (and a bit) or 5 inch then joining a Society will probably the best advice that you can be given. Boiler Testing will be mandatory and with a Society you will get all the advice and help that can be available.

Of interest, the Steam Locomotives at Disney in Orlando are Gas Fired as well. They are genuine 3ft Gauge Locomotives obtained from either Logging or Sugar Lines from I know not where though.
