I like the outdoor grass, quite realistic, please could you say what brand and variety that is in the picture?
I can't remember the name but it was from B&Q and cost £16 to £20 per sq metre. They have quite a range available. The expensive ones are to deep for our use but the cheaper ones are ok. I think it's a case of having a look and see what would suit your needs.
And don't forget old codgers like many of us can get 10% off on Wednesdays

Slight deviation, rather than thread drift..

If you use artificial grass.. What do you lay it on? - if you lay directly on compacted earth, surely it is not dense enough to suppress all growth, and in our 'green and pleasant land' it will slowly sink into the ground / mud etc. will come up through it.

Thinking of the replacement lawn here. not just a bit of railway scenery..

It is normal to remove the top soil, lay a geotextile membrane and cover with fine aggregate unless a good solid base is already there. Open pored tarmac is recommended as one of the best bases..
Timber, i,e decking is OK but will rot as the grass holds moisture. Slabs are not suitable.

Thanks for the info Alan..
So, not a 'DIY', cheap, or quick option.. If it is to last and be done properly then.

Thanks Chris. I will have a look and exploit my old codger status. :-)

No, not cheap. And then you hold it down by raking sand into the top.
I have only done this once for a client and we got a lot of advice from the manufacturer. I think I have their advert leaflet - I'll have a dig.

Here it is - available in loads or bright colours too!

Interesting.. Thanks for taking the time Alan..

Now, what would the neighbours think to an 'LGB red' lawn??
:eek:;):rofl::rofl:

Like the one with the roads - reminds me of the Cycling Profficiency Centre that once had a site in Bradford!

I have a small area with artificial grass laid onto unprepared ground (read sprayed with weed killer then grass laid straight down) and it took the weeds 5 years before they started to break through, seeds deposited onto it took about 2 years to appear.
A spray with weed killer keeps the weeds, that break through, heads down.
A yearly application of a pre-emergent herbicide if available will control any seeds that land on the grass.
An occasional spray with cloudy ammonia keeps the moggies well away.
If I was going to do the area again I would use weed control mat (a close weave poly sheet) or layers of newspapers (which is all most are good for, other than cat litter tray liners) under the artificial grass.
The stuff I used was a cheap type from a large hardware chain in Aust.

You youngsters needn't worry about your knees yet. You will be ok until you are in your 60's at least.

This is an indoor layout but I think the grass looks nice. When the track is painted and ballasted it will look like this:

I have also used artificial grass outdoors for some years now.

Now that idea has just officially been knicked, it fits perfectly in with my future elevated outdoor layout.
An I am in my 60s.

Did my Cycling Proficiency Test in the Multi Storey Car Park to the North of Leeds City Centre....

Scene from recently repeated 'Only Fools & Horses' (aren't they all), Rodney and Delboy are chatting up two girls in a bar, making out that Rodney was a tennis star and Delboy was his manager. One of the girls asks Rodney 'What do you prefer, grass or Astroturf?' Rodney replies.... 'I don't know...I've never smoked Astroturf.'

Paul, Lisa, DON'T use cheap decking boards, its just not worth it.
If the Garden is small, you could consider recycled plastic deck from say Filcris. Lasts forever, only trouble us that joists for putting on not available so most fitters use wood. But for me I would use square guttering downpipe, bolt cut plastic deck doubled for joists fill guttering with post crete then put deck boards in place. Everlasting deck. Bit more expensive, but no maintenance or sealing required so less extra cost than you might originally think.
