New Loco problem

I don't know why the image isn't rendering, you can see it in the gallery it just wont show in the thread....

I have put stock pics up as they might be a bit clearer. Here are the actual boards:

The BEMF settings are currently:

60=5
61=17
62=255

I have programmed them one out so I can see a reset.

Using the Massoth service tool I read CV55 (at whatever I have set it to) usually 0 for a lock/unlock/reset.

So step by step:

Read CV55=0
Write to CV55=55
Read CV55=55 (confirming the programming)

Read CV60=5 ie. not the factory default....

Not working?

The reset function works on none of the CVs. I think it is reasonable at this stage to say I have a defective chipset.....

OR

As it is a 'Massoth' animal, it would be CV 7 for a reset?

The sound card is M/LGB.. Could that be interfering with the decoder responding to programming commands??
Also, some biggish capacitors on that sound card.. Power buffering, perhaps?

Yes you could try unplugging the sound board (red plug I think) and try the programming again. If there is a CV conflict or overlap between the motor decoder and sound decoderthat won't help.

You would have to think these boards have been designed to work together and "should" work in accordance with the manual. It is worth noting that all other functions and features are working flawlessly.

If not for the fact that I need a very accurate stopping profile to run my automation, I would not really need BEMF at all.

The LGB helpdesk suggest it is not working because I am using a Massoth central station. I was somewhat bemused by their suggestion and have asked them why a chip manufactured by Massoth would not work with a control system also manufactured by them (I get the feeling they have no idea what loco or chipset i am having a problem with, I received response number 42.....). I have not had an answer.

Quite possible they dont even know what a chipset is. Your supposed to ask questions like - is it available in blue?:banghead:

Indeed although I must mention here I have received excellent support from the US Marklin helpdesk. I have been in correspondence with a young lady there who has bent over backwards to try and help even though her specialty is clearly not LGB G scale DCC problems. I have an order in for a Massoth PC module and I will use this to see if I can get a better insight into the CV table and perhaps a work around for the BEMF activation.

Maybe if you explain what fish you have with your chips ;)

It is an interesting approach to customer support. I wonder if the majority of their customers purchasing a 1k plus loco really just plonk it on the track and turn the knob. Maybe so and then their "available in blue" approach would make sense however if their customers are enthusiasts then one of their best marketing activities would be to offer excellent technical support.

I don't really know which it is but I have for quite some time assumed I was on my own when it comes to any real technical problem, then everything after they answer the phone is upside :D

Agreed. After 40 years in IT dealing with suppliers with at best mediocre support I have found the best approach if you want something non urgent fixed relatively quickly (and let's face it nothing we do in this hobby is really urgent), is to learn as much as you can about the products you are dealing with (which includes RTFM), try everything you can first (which includes using this excellent forum) and only when all other avenues have come up with a dead end call product support. Especially if the support is in a different country / time-zone / language.

For me part of the fun is learning the technology so I am okay with this approach. :-)

Well it seems this story may have a happy ending. Marklin have agreed to send me a new decoder.

When received I will drop it in and hopefully confirm a fix....
