New Layout

When I grow up I want to be Compo- minus the feret
Country flag
Since my move to Masterton in New Zealand I have started building a new layout outside. I had one inside but it wasn’t big enough to suit my needs and the stock I had, so outside we went again. I have built it on my back lawn. It is 19mm tanalised
ply supported 700mm off the ground on 50mm tree stakes. Once it has been anchored to two wall structures it is as rigid as anything and I can happily walk on it when needed.94CFCC15-4267-4B6C-A05C-1FB2035364F0.jpeg549E10FE-C68A-4EE7-9CA6-248CCFFE052C.jpegA1725F5A-35F4-4118-BA31-EAAA15375A97.jpegE5145F5D-FBF1-47ED-9AC3-665DC5A5CA75.jpegC79B9D92-9BD6-4C1F-A82F-C44648C66845.jpeg26D18D6D-AE0F-4A77-B37A-EB7866D8FF0D.jpegAE13806D-CEA9-4176-A603-8B74A5986002.jpeg49682D87-3173-4FEC-922B-224DF4508EDA.jpegF4F7F258-3A7B-4338-B7CA-F492ADC9ED23.jpeg3043338F-68D5-4BE7-A30D-AA4E10B77735.jpeg

The next stage was track laying. I set the standard as a minimum of R3 LGB curves and points. This gave me something easy to work to. I would have preferred 10’ diameter but settled on something easily accessible here in NZ. I painted the tables with bitumen paint then covered the area with a UV resistant and waterproof carpet. This then became the “ballast” for the track. I also needed to build a set of stairs to access the inside of the layout for easier access. 6FE4293C-667A-4C1F-BF36-B172FE9C19B4.jpegA3E9B988-141F-4AA4-BE72-1275832DB640.jpegD5E8AFC2-559C-4BF9-B0E7-7143EC02EDFF.jpeg5924A593-53E4-4B19-A740-DD541D41E3DB.jpeg639DE840-8C39-4B76-9584-DC91F708A322.jpegA07BB72B-16F0-49B9-A45E-90E5EA49C3CA.jpeg0BC90289-8D9B-4F18-8306-C5D185A249E2.jpegCB6C17A7-8C72-4029-8963-E740A60CFB8D.jpegACE5A754-1840-4E8A-923A-C073F14FE6C0.jpeg0161A59F-5DEA-41A7-862F-951416A87EB8.jpeg

I run Piko DCC with a mixture of sound decoders. The layout is run with a variety of stock collections. I have Austrian ng (Steyrtalbah) for my primary interest followed by Saxon ng and a little standard gauge collection with class 50 and 95 locos. Next was the scenery. To do this I used the matting for the ballast and grass matting for the green areas. It is not perfect but suits my needs and requirements. The hills have been formed with insulation foam. Currently this is where I am, installing grass over the foam.

Not happy with that I am currently building an industrial branch line down the side of the house. This will be a dual 45/64mm gauge area for transporter wagons. They really float my boat. We are just doing the board work currently. The last two tables were built yesterday. We are going to build a removable board to take it into the garage where I can store and assemble stock. A lot easier than taking it in and out of boxes etc.

Wow! That's massive & fantastic!

Would be interested in your build materials and techniques..

I believe you will probably have a similar climate to the UK?
I am looking for alternative ideas for materials. The idea being to do it right, so only do it once.

Things like steel (domestic) fencing, are only just becoming more mainstream here..
No idea how long it would last in the UK climate?

PhilP.

Frosts in the Winter, 0 down to minus 4 or 5°C is usual. Snow is rare. Summer is generally dry, and it can get uncomfortably hot, around high 30's. Wind is not unknown.
Nice place to visit, quite a few Garden Railways.

Noting what you say about bringing stock out even on trays. Without doubt if you can somehow manage it a line into a covered store for at least rolling stock is a worthwhile consideration for setup. Then you only need to carry out locomotives which being much more valuable are better stored in a secure site.

Amazing example of planning and execution. It's rare to see someone who knows what they want, how to do it and then actually do it. Excellent.

I love the fact you have the three red and cream coaches. They are probably my favourite coaches.
Yes all my others are green coaches as they are more the era that I am modelling but they just go so nicely with the2091 I could not bear to change them.

Sorry possibly not clear on that one mate. It will be a removable section so I can close the door into the garage where I will have a table for storing spare stock. It will be 6 metres long and about 600 wide.

Ah removable board to take in the Garage, sorry I I translated that to a table to carry stuff in rather than with track linking storage, yup you have it all covered.

That’s is an impressive build for sure, I will certainly be keeping an eye on your future submissions. Thank you for sharing.
Kev

Climate confirmed. Visited the area yesterday (country race day), 28°C with forecast rain, which never arrived (just like some of the horses I backed).
Pleasant train trip (part of the reason for going to the races) each way..... and Trainman 58 was in charge of the train on my return trip!

Slow horses and fast women ...

Yesterday I spent the day connecting the outer part down the side of the house with the new storage yards. All the tablework is complete now. This is huge but will have a dual gauge interchange down her3 for both rollbocke and rollwagen. The storage roads will have plastic track to save the ever costly brass!384D5F4E-7EE3-4E5C-8252-E52133113145.jpegE0C96CD2-2C52-4C06-B5A1-BE019002E48A.jpegA79A8203-0D15-4FB9-A42D-EFFDEC200144.jpeg3434A677-3945-458E-BAD2-1314D4F0C63D.jpeg

It has been a busy week. I have managed to “grass” three of the hills and the farm area. All slowly getting there.6CFB8E91-30CA-4D2F-94F6-64232E21DC03.jpeg0ED879A7-643A-40BC-BDB9-1CDA01EE5CFA.jpeg767C16D8-56DF-4AC9-97BB-2AF9D17E1EBB.jpeg2A378D12-0FD0-4B75-ACA4-4007C7FA1D48.jpegB0DF3647-C90A-4FEF-B34D-46B9DB8BE033.jpeg

Looking good, but those outer tracks seem very close to the edge, will you be putting a safety rail up?
