New diesel for the WGLR

Thanks to Rick (steinman), the WGLR has a new loco, yet another diesel. It`s a GRS body mounted on a Playmobil remote control chassis. Whoever built it did a really neat job, the body simply fits straight on top of the chassis with a few strips of velcro. You may notice that the exhaust is a touch on the long side, that`s because it contains the aerial. The original battery pack and charger were both a bit suspect, so I rang the very nice man at Strikalite and he made up a 4 x AA battery pack that actually fits into the original battery holder. I`ve soldered up and modified this battery pack so that it plugs into the electrics via a BEC connector.

This afternoon, between the showers, I gave her a run for the first time on the WGLR. Slow speed running isn`t what I`m used to with my Cliff Barker RC kit (understandably) and she takes off like a scalded cat if you`re not careful when running light engine. It actually drives a little like a live steam loco and when I started adding wagons, things improved. In the end she ran for 1/2 hour pulling 5 Accucraft 4 wheelers and an IP brake van without any signs of distress or loss of performance from the little battery pack. I do have to stand right in the middle of our tiny garden to guard against glitching all the way round the railway. The old girl has certainly got some pulling power with plenty of added weight and two traction tyres.

I`ve started adding a few details like lamp irons and door handles, but there`s loads of opportunity for more and I`m really looking forward to doing that. Adding WGLR standard hook and loop couplings is certainly going to be a challenge.

I`m going to leave her operating with the Playmobil system for now, but I might replace it with a Cliff Barker receiver sometime in the future. A little belter! Thanks Rick.  :D :D

Sweet Mel, Im sure she'll receive the WGLR weathering after detailing. Nice loco, fit in well with your line.

Mel she suits the WGLR perfectly, I'm glad you like her :)

So, is it possible to keep the Playmobil TX, and fit a better RX / ESC to these units then?
If so, has it been covered on the Forum at all?
If not, is it just a 'diode tree' needed to calm them down a bit?

TIA,
PhilP.

Nice stonework on the railroad, Mel. The new loco goes very well with it.

Sweet....

RX / ESC are one unit that can be removed,  space is available to fit  a receiver and an ESC. [attachthumb=1]

Nice looking Diesel.

Thanks Arthur,

But can you get something better that still uses the Playmobil TX??

What a little cutie (don't get ideas Mel ) it fits right in with your line.

PhilP inquired, can you get something better that still uses the Playmobil TX??

Without wishing to hijack the thread, the answer is yes.
The Playmobil (many items are re badged SANWA ) TX is a single channel 27MHz transmitter, center off forward/reverse, therefore any 27MHz receiver with a matching crystal will work.
For an ESC (electronic speed control), number of choices are available, I am at present using either the Conrad Mini cruise control,

or these,

both are reliable and offer excellent speed control.

Note: Should have added it also works the other way around as well, using a different TX to operate the Playmobil RX................................

Note 1: And if you happen across the old Playmobil RC stick set including the chassis , not the new modern one, grab it, the ESC that is built into the RC/RX module is like **** off a shovel, quick, fast, smooth and very precise in terms of speed control!

The Playmobil TX is very limited in range - why keep it but change the RX? Possibly better to change the lot.

The original Playmobil 27MHz has its limitations, although I've found it's transmission range pretty good in a large garden. Inside, steel beams/lintels interfere with it as do mobile 'phones being used nearby. In addition, even though there are Playmobil crystals with different frequencies, they do seem to have some "overlap" with the result that running two locos at once can be problematic. A member of this forum (whose name I've forgotten, for which apologies) gave me some non-Playmobil crystals and these have certainly dealt with the overlap problem.

The information on Playmobil compatible ESC units is useful, partly because I didn't know what ESC stood for, other than on a computer keyboard, but also as another route to follow with my locos.

I'm not sure I've come across this one, have you a picture of it, please?
