Hey y'all; Am making some more modifications to the several Bachmann 4 wheel cabooses on hand.
Modifications began a few years ago in sort of a 'do something this year, wait a few years, do something else, wait a few years, do another thing" cycle.
This time it is underframe toolboxes, inspired by old time photos of real cabooses.
Will probably make 2 styles.
The tapered one in-progress in photos below and a rectangular one.

A previous modification was to provide something approximating a working 3-point suspension by taking advantage of how the axles are attached.
Hopefully the photos below will tell the story on their own.

Very useful photos. I've been thinking of doing something like this. Thank you for showing that the idea can work.

Welcome!
Of the local large scalers I've talked to in person since 2009 I seem to be the only one who has thought of most of these things I'm doing; a situation quite unexpected and somewhat astonishing; it is difficult to imagine I am that original.

(come on, just because I was a lefthanded redheaded autistic kid born in a pink painted hospital in southern California in the early 1960s that can't mean I'm any different from or more original than anyone else)
(sadly over the last decade and a half what is left of my red hair has turned an ash brown) (I've seen similar happen to 2 other people, one related and one not related)

That is a very worthwhile mod, I have 3 chassis on scratch bodies and will look to do this. Will certainly get them to track smoother..

I have done the same without cutting the base - using the same 3 screw attachment. If you put spacer washers between the metal crosspiece and the base to lift the axle up a fraction, then you can put a similar washer in the center pivot of the other axle and not tighten the screw so it wobbles. Yours probably has more movement.
