It doesn't matter how well I clean my engines, the next time they're taken out, they are still covered in crude. I'm sure the engines are having a laugh at my expense, like a dog who finds a muddy puddle as soon as it's had a bath

Oily messy things are going to collect dust like a dust mite, even after cleaned there will still be traces of oil. I got fd up of cleaning mine after every running day years ago.
 
It's a messy hobby, agreed. Just that trapped moisture and steel axles don't mix well. Worthwhile trying to dry it out thouroughly before the winter lay-over.

Just a remark :

For axles and motion I use a quite light oil reasoning this will flush out any grit rather than form an abrasive paste.

As a result the track does not iook neither nice nor neat, though.

After some practice I felt brave enough to run Mavine lesser by touch (burnt fingertips !) and the more by feel - it is no magic at all: counting laps and pump bottle strokes you can get by without reference to water glass and steam gauge.

I used a Märklin Maxi tender which by default comes wired for directional lights. There is a standard audio socket into which the supply cable from the locomotive would plug .

After exchanging the grain of wheat bulbs for LEDs (and inserting a resistor), I soldered a homemade battery holder (CR3202, if you must know) to a headphone plug which when in use will simply dangle between the wheels.

This could be applied to the headlights as well, - if it weren't so hot and messy between cylinders and smokebox where I already have had to remove enough of molten plastic and burnt rubber.
 
Another silly mistake I made so as to keep you amused.

After having checked underneath the chassis bottom plate how to route the silicon wires Mavine developed wheel slip issues. True, the Märklin chassis is notably lighter than Regner's ... let's add some lead then. Alas, this did not seem to help ...

Not paying attention to the notches (one to accomodate movement of the sprung center axle, the other where an electrical pick-up shoe would go) I had the thing wrong way round when marking for drilling - The laugh's on me !

Track cleaning, as well, should prevent slipping. I snatched one of the scrubbing sponges (or whatever these are called) from the kitchen sink and tied it underneath a three-plank.

And a few drops of lamp oil to moisten it. (Things on hand ...)

Here's my headlights project.

Märklin used their regular Maxi lamps. Each consists of a plastic body and glass bolted to a stamped metal bracket as the rear face.

I inserted a LED and soldered one leg to the bracket. The other leg received a generous length of silicon cable.

Behind the buffer beam some crazy loops so as to give enough leeway for future repairs.

The wire was fed through the box frame and connected to a home made hattery holder underneath the cab floor : finally good use for those gas bottle plastic caps.

As with your car, the bodywork served as ground for current return.
