Loco memory in DCC base station.

i was lucky enough to upgrade from LGB3 to Massoth 1210Z for Christmas, with thanks to my dear wife - who is currently the best ever!

I thought that the information about locos, speed steps, avatar, etc was stored on the base station. But the 1210Z has all my details as soon as I put the loco on the line and select it on the Navigator. So I assume the memory is stored in the Navigator which I find slightly surprising. unless its in the loco chip - which I don't think is possible?

any ideas.

Correct.. that info is stored in the Nav..
Can cause confusion when you take YOUR Navigator to another line, if more than one loco has the same address on both systems. - Does mean you get your speed-step settings etc. brought over, if the Central Station supports your settings.

its as philip correct says.. fun at othere lines...

Can you explain what happens ? A small group of us are building a sectional exhibition layout in G scale, and will be using our own navigators on it. My thoughts were that if we store across all navigators the locos that we intend to use on the one layout then there won't be any conflicts. However, numbers of locos that will not be used on the one layout will be for different locos.

As I see it, if you call up your own loco on your Navigator - all is fine.
If you call up anothers loco with your navvy you will be able to control it (atleast all basic commands) but pictures and sound controls may not be as you expect. Same with calling up your loco on anothers Navvy.
You cant call up a loco address already called up because the system wont let you.

i think!

You can 'steal' a loco from another Navigator.. You then control.
Main problem is 'us'.. We see a picture of a familiar diesel (say), and do not realise (or forget) we are actually controlling Fred's steamer..!!
Other problem is the 'disco' effects of non-matching speed-step settings.
F8 may turn the sound off on your loco, but may be for switching speed on the one on the track..

The possible answer with a Club Layout is to try to have different numbers for each Locomotive.,possible with Massoth chips as you can have 9999 different numbers (I think) but with LGB Chips you are restricted to around 21. I had this problem with Andy Rush when we shared Locomotives on his line. I made a Matrix of the available Locomotives and as his were all LGB with about 3 exceptions renumbered my Massoth Locomotives accordingly. We still had the occasional problem, particularly with the LGB Track Cleaner. We them removed the clashing Locomotive from the Track during Track cleaning. Not a perfect solution if you have many LGB Locomotives but a possibility if you think carefully.

I also find it helps to renumber locomotives so that they represent their Chip Number in some way, the safest and non destructive way is to use Printed Stickers. Perhaps Paper Label Printer or as I do A4 Sticky Paper that I get on the net to renumber all sorts of things and do Factory, Station Names etc.

Maybe that was true at one time with very old decoders but it is not true with any LGB decoders I've got. Any two digit address can be set into the decoders. The restriction on the range of loco addresses that can be used is somewhere in the LGB system itself and not in the decoder.

Interesting that with the Massoth system information is stored in the handset. With my Lenz system nothing at all is stored in the handset, but everything such as speed steps, loco name etc is stored in the command station.

I believe there is a way of 'backing up' the information to the Central station (Massoth)..
This allows you to transfer settings between Navigators. - Mark will be along to confirm, or deny this in a minute, no doubt..

The MTS3 is limited to 23 locos with the LGB remotes. If used with the Massoth Navigator it is increased to 9,999 (actually 10,239).
It looks like the decoder 3 also supports 10,239 addresses.

Sourced from the LGB catalogue 2006 - I am not aware of any increase since then. It is not clear if the Decoder 2 supports 23, 99 or more.

Oh that is interesting, any tips on how to get the Higher Numbers. Maybe I should just try it on some of my LGB Locs on my Massoth by updating CV1.
