Lil Big Hauler Bash

Al Kramer had two L'il Big Hauler passenger cars listed on Evilbay for a very good price. Well, I thought so. One coach and a baggage car for $12.95 + $9.90 shipping. They consisted of the shells and roofs only. No floors or wheels. I've been wanting to create some sort of self propelled rail-bus.

Using an LGB motor block from my parts department, a bin on the top shelf, I have made some progress. Still quite a bit more work to do and any suggestions or criticisms are welcomed.

I have the basic outline with the exception of some sort of side frame under the body. I plan to paint it a color that I haven't thought of yet. Here's some photos of what I have so far.

Looks real beauty! corker! to me...my rail-car consists of two the same....whats the make up of the radiator grill ?

Very nice Dan, me just thinks that there perhaps needs to be a little more vision for the driver, perhaps another opening to match in the other side? But what a super find and inspiring little Railcar. For the sideframes if you have some what about from a Bachman Tramcar? Or you could rough up something froma piece of Ally or Plastic angle, could screw to the base of the car?

Thanks Marty. The radiator grille is a piece of what I think is called embroidery mesh. My late aunt had a bunch if kits that had wool thread and these plastic mesh sheets. The sheets are about a foot square.

I like it! Plenty of prototypes to pick a livery from too. I await more!

Chain drilling ? Phil, I wonder if you are talking about the wheel wells ? Those were not made using a drill press. What I did was dado the wells out on the table saw. But instead of taking the time to change to a dado blade, I ran the blocks across the blade repeatedly.

Some of that dangerous work reminds me that I must find a space somewhere to set up my Electric Jigsaw. Has worked fine for me on Wood but also thin Metal with the appropriate blades. It has not seen the light of day since before I left Luton in 2000!

A good jigsaw is well worth having. At present I own a Sears model. It's not bad but doesn't compete with some of the ones I used in high school. They were heavy cast iron models that stayed put when in operation.....
