Lgb 27253 Forney Loco Standard Dc - Need Help For Sound Install

Hi,

I'm an long-time railroader, but newbe to LGB/G scale. I've purchased a new LGB 27253 Forney DC Standard Loco and would like to install sound. Does anyone know anything about it, instructions, pics, etc?

I take it that you JUST want to add sound that will work on DC, Bob, not upgrade to DCC at the same time?

There are always the LGB "black box" (65000 series) self-contained sound modules, but although these are very simple to use in terms of wiring they do have the disadvantage of being quite physically large - in a loco like the Forney there proabably wouldn't be any option except to put one in the cab, where it is a bit visually obvious and even then it might be a tight squeeze.
However a much smaller (and cheaper) option that is almost as easy to install would be a Massoth "S" sound module, which you could buy ready programmed with the right sound files for your Forney; the electronics module itself could be hidden away inside the bunker space with a suitable speaker, and the only wiring needed is two wires direct to track power and the the plug-in wiring to the speaker. The module will work on either DC or DCC, though obviously on DC you don't get direct control over things like the whistle and bell - though these can be triggered with reed switches and track magnets if you want to fit them as extras.

I'm sure several others will add alternative suggestions, there are a number of ways of doing what you want at varying levels of cost and complexity - I'm only offering what would be my preferred choice in your case. :)

Thanks for the info Jon. Sounds like a good possibility. I'm still waiting for the Forney to arrive from Trainz and then will try to get a module. Any idea of where I can get LGB info (user instructions, breakdown diagram, etc)? Tried on Onlytrains lgb manual list but couldn't find it.

Bob,

'S' decoder, speaker, and a volume pot would fit in the rear bunker.. Power is picked up from the pony-truck under the bunker/cab and is fed to the rear accessory socket, so getting power is trivial.

If you buy your decoder from the right people, they will set it up for the external volume control.

I have one in bits.. Will take some pictures over the next few days.

Thanks Phil. Appreciate the help. Btw, do you or anyone have the diagrams and instructions for an LGB 20211 Steinz engine? I would like to install a smoke unit and a sound unit in it. Likewise an LGB 2020D.

Thanks. I appreciate the pointer. However, when going to the site, I only find a listing of the products. Is there a way to get the actual information? It only says that they are out of print and might be available at dealers, etc.

You need to click on the relevant underlined link Bob.

I looked here for the Forney but there are no pdf files in this case....

I think that have a few LGB USA steam modules LGB 65001 spare. (as I now am DCC-ing with sound decoders).
Here is a link to a vid where someone has put the 65001 in a Forney
 
Earlier iterations of the Forney were numbered:
20251
25251
26251
and probably more in-between as well!
Try looking for those numbers in the Champex list Bob.

I'm guessing that guy must have taken the 65001 apart and installed the circuit board and speaker separately without the black box case, Mike? If not, where the heck has he hidden it? ;)
Is there enough space to slip it into the bunker?

I just wanted to thank all you folks for your invaluable help. I haven't yet received the Forney, so have to wait to see what I want to do with it. However, pulled apart one of my Stainz engines (based on the Walthers description - great description) and put a smoke device in and also a defeat microswitch from Radio Shack and worked great. Have another Stainz to do the same to. Would like to put a sound unit in these Stainzs', but not sure want to spend what it takes. Time will tell.

Might be easier to find a Stainz with the simple factory sound already in it.
