LGB 26813 or 26815 DR Steam Locomotive

I Love Live Steam
Country flag
Hi I am looking to purchase either an LGB 26813 or 26815 DR Steam Locomotive. The 26815 is a limited edition with weathering and sound whereas the 26813 has a DCC interface and no sound. Both have smoke synchronised to the wheels. Apart from these differences does anyone know if they are otherwise identical?
Thanks,
Mark

They're visually different, the 99 7238-1 has a different front compared to the 99 222.

My opinion: the weathering on the 99 222 looks terrible, and isn't even prototypical. Every time I've visited the Harz, their locos are as clean as they can be. They take very good care of their steam engines.

I agree with the above, poor weathering not very prototypical as the locos are quite clean in use these days!

If you are considering purchasing one It would probaly be cost beneficial to but the less expensive version and fit your own sound decoder, and perhaps just lightly weather it? :)

They are actually quite different Locomotives as has been aluded to on this forum before. Look at the Chimney area of the Weathered 26815 99 222. This was one of a small Batch that was built In 1931. The others were built in 1954 and have been considerably rebuilt at varying times since. This locomotive has been retrorebuilt by the Harz to represent it as a Traditional Loc in as built condition. So the weathering is probably only correct if you want it to look as it did prior to being rebuilt sometime between 1931 and before the Wall came down. If you are looking for one as the majority are now go for the 26813. Though there are many small detail differences between each Locomotive (of the 1954 built ones) that reflects differing dates of subsequent Rebuild. In fact in recent years most (I think) have been through Meiningen Works with a pretty well new Locomotive emerging. With again detail changes in minor detail.

Back in 2011 I was standing on the Viewing Platform at Wernigerode with my good friend Andy Rush. We were intrigued to see that no two of the 6 or 7 Locomotives that were present were actually 100% the same. The differences were things like Pipe Runs, mounting Locations of Sanders and sundry other plumbing.

Enjoy whatever one you get, they are formidable models and cetainly make a presence wherever they are and on any Layout that you may take it too. If you are ever in the St.Neots area and want to give her a run with two others in a Harz type Layout, you will be very welcome.

Hi All thanks for the replies. If I get the 26813 and fit an ESU Loksound 54500 V4.0 XL Large Scale Decoder decoder will it plug straight into the DCC decoder socket in the locomotive?
Sorry but I have been out of garden railways for a few years and am now getting back into it!
Thanks,
Mark

I have been looking through the pics of my last 3 trips to the Harz. 99 222 was a bit Camera Shy on those 3 trips. But I have here 2 pics of 99 7238 (LGB 26813) the first leaving ET in 2010. The second in Wernigerode Works 2011.

I am sure that someone will be able to post a pic of 99 222 (LGB 26815) for you.

If you'd consider an older second-hand version of one of these, there is one at Glendale (a digital & sound version) that is going for £900.....

http://www.glendalejunction.co.uk/SecondHand.html

It looks quite well-used, but that's a good price compared with the brand-new ones (and it's probably better built, since it's a pre-Marklin original LGB one).

I don't think so. The decoder you mention seems to have screw terminal only and the loco the 10 pin DCC Interface connector. You can make your own connector cable or buy the one Massoth make (8312062).

If the older (pre marklin) versions, weathered or not, appeal..??
A trip to Chasewater may be worth it.. We seem to have more than we can realistically 'steam' here.

Might even be persuaded to part with a genuine 'Shades' version for the right money..

I took this shot of 99 222 at Wernigerode on 16 May 2011.

You must have a bloody big wall if you are going to have that stuffed and mounted....

Now that we have 2 pics of the real things you can see the Big difference on the Feedwater Heater, that is the big thing on top of the Smokebox. This and other minor details mark out the current difference between 99 222 and the others.

I have both: 99 222 and 99 7238-1. Both are amaising and different. They both worth to be in collection.

99 222 has Massoth decoder and 99.23 has Esu Loksouns XL.

I could say that esu sounds much more rich, interesting and prototipical. But scope of supply of esu is awfull.

Massoth- in the box: loud speaker with cable and connector, screws, spacers for set up of decoder, 2 harnesess for old and new LGB interface, Spare cable for clock input from smoke generator, screws for laud speaker, manual with clear directions, how to connect.

Esu Loksound: just decoder. Even no directions in manual how to connect to new LGB connector. God bless Massoth, which manual descdibes what and how to connect.

Meanwhile, ESU is more expensive.

My quastion is why modern European producer has no respect to the customer so much(in comparison to Massoth).

I see. You mean to say the Massoth kit is more comprehensive, contains more parts and accessories.

Interesting, my Massoth S came with a very good printed manual and a SUSI cable (that I can't use), but nothing else. My Zimo decoders didn't even come with a manual.

I think you'll find the marklin connector is the odd one out but the ESU decoder just plugs in if you chop off the equivalent blank pins, I've put the details in my thread on Rhatia which also has the new socket. Pics of what the pins are, are on page 16 of the manual.
Personally for the better sound I'd go with the ESU any day and it's only getting around to it that I haven't binned the factory sound on my earlier spec 7222 and changed mine to ESU.
