LGB 24683 recently arrived to join my small fleet of saxon mayers. The sound is different to that of 24682 this may be due to the designers taking into account that 24683 is a neubaulok and 24682 is an altbaulok

Slightly wrong product numbers.
The 26842 is, as you say, of an un rebuilt model but it has an early MFX sound decoder which was universally slated for being very poor sound wise. The chuffs were far to fast and the sound was tinny. The recently released 26843 presumably has an updated sound card fitted. I would think the differences you can hear are most likely to be because of this modification rather than any difference in the digital recordings between locos..

I've listened to the sound on a 26843 (Via youtube) and found it to be much improved to the 26842 tinny sound. I wonder if I can get hold of one of these newer sound cards and fit it into my 26842

As mentioned in a previous post the 26842 sound is known to be poor and inferior to earlier examples.
Marklin/LGB may perhaps be considering a fix. I respectfully suggest you contact you dealer or perhaps Marklin directly.

Ah, found the reference, take a look at posts 23 and a few onwards in this topic.

Yes, after seeing the youtube clip of the new Saxon Meyer 26843, I E mailed Marklin about a replacement sound unit for my 26842, waiting a response.
