LGB 24267 smoke unit CV

Hello- I’m very much new to digital trains and LGB MFX. That being said I have an LGB 24267 that has a pulsing smoke unit. How or can I increase the smoke output on the unit? And what CV’s will I need to alter? I have a manual with a CV table and I’m using a CS2 with the trains. Thanks!


Edit: upon further inspection I can now say the smoke unit is a Massoth 8415001 smoke unit. Im wondering how I can increase the voltage output of this device. Thanks!

Not so easy..

In effect, you have two decoders in the loco. - One is the smoke unit, and the other drives the motors, lights etc. of the loco.
You need to isolate the main decoder, so you are only altering the pulsed smoke unit.

Ahh ok. Is there a good way to program this sort of thing? Say mini crocodile clips or is there a device I can purchase to program the unit with? I see that it’s max load is 1 amp however I have a CS2 that has a 5amp power supply. Last thing I want to do is connect it out right to the track and completely ruin it. Thanks for your advice!

This sometimes works if you have two decoders in a loco. Assuming it is the massoth smoke unit, that is normally connected directly to track power. Whether this method works or not depends on how it is connected to the track power but it is easy to try. Place the loco on your programming track, turn off the power using the 4 way switch position 0 normally in the cab, and then try reading CV 255. If it is value 162 then you are talking to the massoth smoke unit decoder. You can then proceed to adjust the CV settings using the manual in the link provided in the previous posting. When you have finished set the 4 position switch back and test on your main track. If this does not work you will have to open up the loco I guess.
 
Hi! I don’t think I can access certain CV’s due to the decoder being locked into MFX read protocol. However I also couldn’t read the loco in switch position 0 however thank you for that suggestion! Should I look at getting some wire to connect to the track to the generator on its own? Thanks!
 
Hello a small update. I connected the unit to the track directly to see if the CS2 would recognise it on loco address 3 (as stated in the massoth manual) however it couldn’t recognise it. Should I look into acquiring a Massoth PC modul in the future to write CV’s to their products? Thank you again.

You can change the protocols an mfx decoder accepts, for example making it DCC only. I can't remember the exact CV I'll look it up later. I did not know that Maerklin used Massoth pulse smoke units in their newer mfx fitted locos, are you sure about this?
 
Unless it’s a altered version of their smaller pulsed smoke unit that doesn’t have a decoder? All I can see is that it’s the exact one they have in the picture for that smoke unit on their site.

According to the exploded parts diagram the smoke generator (Rauchgenerator) is part E278 188. It may well be an OEM Massoth device, I don't know.

The CV to change decoder protocols is CV 50, set it to 0 for DCC only.

Has the 'loco' been changed from DCC address 3, to your knowledge?

i am not quite able to make out the part number on the 'Massoth' label on the smoke unit? - It might be worth an email to hotline@massoth.de asking if the unit should be addressable on it's own.
 
I'm not sure the smoke unit has a decoder. I'm having trouble with the one in my LGB LD1 G3/4. In addition to power, clock in, clock out it also has a harness that plugs into the loco decoder SUSI jack. From the picture in post 8 yours also appears to have a SUSI harness (the very fine wires in the pic). I see Massoth used to make a SUSI pulsed smoke generator from some older posts on this site. I suspect Märklin may be using this older SUSI interface design to be compatible with their mfx+ decoders. Perhaps Mark can advise.

Caution: thread hijack!
The trouble i'm having is with the smoke unit fan motor. It will be pulsing away then just stop working. I disassembled it and cleaned everything thoroughly with contact cleaner. The heater works fine. The fan motor rotor has a whole lot of side to side slop (not longitudinal) in the bearings like they're severely worn. It starts running if I jiggle the rotor only to stop again. The excessive play does not seem right to me. Anyone have experience working on these? Is this normal? By the way, mine looks just like M's in post 8. Forgot to take a pic or otherwise record the stick-on label info when I had it out.
