Leopold - a challenge

You may also need to consider laying some suitable track, depending on the direction in which you wish to launch your projectiles (towards a neighbour's troublesome cat perhaps?). Elevation is not problem but of course plain line limits you to a single direction. The solution was to lay chords at different radii so that the gun could be positioned quite accurately. Below is a diagram of the tracks laid for the battery operated by the Royal Marines near Dover in the Second World War (Martin Mill Military Railway), which had three 13.5 inch guns, I believe.

A local online hobby store has the 1/35 scale "Dora" kit for sale for $895.00. The kit comprises over 3000 parts and is almost 60" in length. The 'Dora' was 'Leopolds' very big brother and certainly did not have Leopold's maneuverability.

That problem`s already resolved as I have 4 continuous runs on the HVR so in theory I could park it anywhere (by the way Martyn I`m still trying to locate either info or piccy of the sleeper built halt for you). Anyway Krupp Engineering certainly burned the midnight oil last night. On second thoughts Krapp Engineering might be more appropriate. There`s no finesse with this - just tubes that happened to fit inside each other without too much hammering and a length of aluminium tube up the middle to provide some rigidity and a more realistic bore. The barrel length works out at about a scale 48 feet with an 11 inch calibre. Looks like this will be a goer. Wagon will be mounted on two 5 axle trucks constructed from two Playmobil coach chassis. Axles 2 and 4 will be rigid with 1 3 and 5 `floating`  a la LGB/Playmobil principle. I bought a bag full of those swivel bits ages ago and have been wondering what to do with them

'Course I am! Got a Seuthe unit all ready to provide a more realistic puff of smoke and a high intensity red LED for the muzzle flash. Silly boy!!!

Haven`t got DCC, just analogue, so been outside with a Poundland rattle(can). Will that suffice?

Must say its starting to look the biz now.

Must have too much time on my hands despite having just done 6 consecutive days of 12 hour shifts. Googled K5 model and found some interesting photos of the Trumpeter kit being put together and a wealth of WW2 film on YouTube. This is the 1/35th scale chassis.
After some searching in the garage came up with two Playmobil coaches which were duly stripped to the bare bones. They make a passable representation in my opinion.
Next two A4 sheets of 1.5mm plasticard were butted together to get an idea of proportion. The steel ruler is 600mm long.

There must have been a massive recoil when fired. Were they anchored to the track or some other "deadmen" type arrangement?

No John, they just shot backwards several feet. From what technical data I have been able to find the barrel is mounted on a secondary 'tube' which appeared to contain a shock absorbing device. Not sure if spring or haudraulic. If you check out Krupp K5 on YouTube there is plenty of archive footage of the beast in anger.
 
Please keep this thread going as I intend a railway gun to be my next project. I have an rc bb gun mech which will mean I can fire it too. What is the availability /price like on the ideal lgb wagon Alan stockers showed?
 
In those movie scenes it looks like the whole wagon is allowed to roll back a couple of metres.
