JMRI, Windows8 and IE10

I've got a Sprog, and accompanying JMRI software on my old laptop (XP and IE8) This is the easiest and most user friendly way to read and programme decoders. I now have a new machine (HP Envy - who thought of that as a brand name!) one of those posh ones where the screen detaches to be a pad style computer, with Windows 8 and IE10. I have tried several times to download JMRI software on to this, but it just won't load - from any of the "mirror" sites hosting JMRI. Has anyone had this problem? Has anyone solved it?

Is there still "Control Panel" on W8? In W7 there is a feature there to run programs under older versions of Windows as in-> Control panel>>>Programs>>>Programs and features>>>Run programs made for older versions of windows. Is this still available?

Yes, there is still a compatibility mode.. More awkward to get to if not a 'Administrator' I believe.
Not got access to Winders8, so am unable to offer more help/insite I am afraid.

I don't think PhilKelly has got as far as trying to run JMRI - he says he cannot even download it successfully? If it were me I'd be asking the question on the JMRI yahoo forum (maybe you already have PhilKelly, I can't see yahoo groups @work)

Ah, yes.. Re-read the post..
Suggestion:
When you download in the most recent versions of the Winders OS, it put the downloaded file(s) into a separate 'Downloads' area. - Normally under My Documents.

Can you download (and save) the software locally?

If you can, try right-clicking on the icon for the software and run it with elevated privileges (as Administrator)..

Then report back.

Or try using Google Chrome instead of IE10 to carry out the download?
Or any other browser (Firefox / Safari etc)

Worth a go?

Ian - yes, that worked. JMRI downloaded via Chrome. JMRI Installation process then hung up cos Java not installed. Java download failed at first, but will try again today. Slow progress - I thought technology was meant to save us time not waste it!
Thanks for all advice!

Progress! Java loaded, JMRI loaded: icon on Start page; programme starts and screens appear! - but can't find Sprog. JMRI wants COM port to be specified on JMRI screen - need to spend more time looking how W8 manages its com ports...

Pretty certain that download problem is due to IE configuration settings.
Makes it more secure, so probably best to leave it 'as is' and use Chrome for 'known' downloads IMO.
Have a look at this to see if it helps (via Chrome) - http://www.sprog-dcc.co.uk/downloads/Win8Installation.pdf
Thanks for that. Sprog does not need driver for earlier Windows versions, but does for Windows8, (without it, W8 can't "find" the Sprog. Once again, progress makes things harder!). Helpfully, available on website above. Will download today and report. Wonder how people using proprietary (e.g. LGB, Massoth) decoder reading/writing hardware/software are coping?

I was wrong about Sprog not needing driver for earlier versions of Windows, but it's on the disc that comes when you buy it. Downloaded latest driver version from Sprog website, but now W8 won't unzip it - and Sprog has disappeared from "My computer". It was there before.
I will just keep trying.

Keep up with it Phil - Sure you'll get there :)

Aren't I glad I've just "acquired" an old Acer Veriton N260G PC with Windows XP that I'm keeping this way (for the moment - as support for XP from Microsoft ceases in April 2014) and using ONLY for train related applications - LGB MTS / Massoth programming and firmware updating

I was in Curry's last week (looking at washing machines with SWMBO). Assistant enquires if he can help. I said laptop with XP on it. "Don't they all he said walking away dismally".

I know this is not the place for a rant, so- please forgive me.
I have just bought a new desktop, running windows 8.1 so far as I can find, backwards compatibility ( still can't find the 'wizard') goes back to windows 7, XP is NOT supported! although some of the programs will run with no trouble.
Personally, I feel that microsoft should have split the operating systems. The one with apps for the tablet/mobile/touchscreen market and the desk top system for--- desktops.
I am glad that I kept my old XP system and run the two systems via a vkm switch using the same monitor.

Sorry for going off subject.

I thought win 8.1 (compared to win 8 ) made it easier to switch back to the more traditional desktop way of working?

My lad and I both hated the app-based approach on his new win 8 laptop, so we changed it to default to the traditional desktop view. Can always get to the apps by hitting the Windows key.

Yes, he runs some of our older household XP programs on it with no problems.
