Its Been A Funny Old Week - Sound Wise

Fn3 Logging & Mining
On Monday I decided to fit a Uhlenbrock Sound Module in my Climax, its a new Climax, fitted with Plug and Play and also a fitted speaker which is wired in.
Fitting the Sound module was a piece of cake, and it was on the test track for trialing in 15 minutes. No problems at all, and the sound was superb.

Fast forward then to Thursday and I receive two more Sound Modules from A & H Models, one is a repaired module from my Heisler ( managed to pull two wires out of the susi socket), and the second is a new one to fit in my Forney.

The Heisler was first up, this loco, as with 90% of mine has a Lenz Gold Maxi in it, the loco ran fine without the sound module but once the sound module had been fitted it would produce no sounds at all, but it runs fine.

Next up was the Forney which I bought with a Massooth decoder fitted and it had run well. I fitted the sound module and nothing, the loco wont run at all and theres no sound.

So - looks as though I have made a right muddle of these two which I will look at over the weekend I will change over the Massooth decoder to a Lenz Maxi and see what happens, Ive had notice from Cliff George as to what to try - so its gonna be a busy weekend

I may have put this in the wrong catergory - should it be in SOUNDS ? Mod please move if ok

Sorry to hear of your problems Graham.

With the Massoth decoders (unlike the Lenz ones) the SUSI bus is deactivated by default. It has to be activated with bit 4 of CV 49.

I don't see why just fitting something onto the SUSI bus should stop the loco running. I'd suggest the first step to isolate the problem would be to gently disconnect the SUSI sound module from the decoder (gently pulling the plug with tweezers, not the wires!) and see if the loco will now run. If it does, there must be something wrong with the SUSI sound module, if it doesn't something else is wrong, fix that issue first.

Never had any problems with the sound modules you are using. They do work with both Lenz and Massoth decoders.

I did once fix an issue for a local G-Scale society member. It turned out his Massoth decoder had SUSI hardware but the software in the decoder was a version that didn't support it. We sent the decoder away to Massoth for a software upgrade, via Mark, and when it came back everything worked. Probably this is not your issue since it didn't stop the loco from moving.

I'm sure it will all work eventually!

Im sure it all will work ok someday Cliff, its just a case of getting on with it, had family round todsy so no chance.
Tommorow I will make a start and go through all your suggestions.
Im putiing my layout up at the Garden Rail show next Msrch at Stafford so its got to be right for then. At the moment I have 4 of my locos complete and fitted with Sound decoders, so I should be able to have all running ok by then. Im looking to slowly add more stock, ie a couple of 2 truck shays and either another 2 6 6 2 , or a k27.

Hi Cliff,
Ive put my Forney on the programming track, and no response at all, so I disconnected the Susi from its socket, made a cuppa and came back and reconnected it. I now have a front light working but nothing else.
Next step is yo go to CV 49 and try to reset it

Been to cv 49, bit 4, activated it, but then I have a choice of settings, which one do I go for ?

Do you mean that you don't know what to set the other bits in CV 49 to?

You should leave them set to what they are currently set to. It probably doesn't really matter what the other bits are set to. If you have lost how CV49 was originally set to I'd try setting it to 22. This will give Parallel data transfer only (because you have a Lenz system), load control on for digital and analogue, A1 standard, and SUSI bus.

When you had the SUSI disconnected did your loco move?

PM me if I can help.

No Cliff, I dont know what I should set cv49 to as in bit numbers. When I got to changing the bit number I hadnt realised until then what the bit was set at.
However I realised that it set at o zero, so I faffed about a bit and left it at zero when I realised what was happening.
So the Forneys still the same as it was this am, thats front light is on but it wont move.
I will pm you tommorow and let you know whats happening.
Thanks Cliff

The default value for CV49 in a Massoth driving decoder (M, L, XL, XXL) is 2....(Parallel data, Digital load control on, Analogue load control off, A1 Standard output, Massoth bus).

Setting it to 18 will result in the default values (as above) with the SUSI bus. Cliff's suggestion of 22 is good also.

Which decoder is fitted? If you do not know what it is please tell me the value in CV255. Also what is the firmware version (read CV7) ?

Mark,
The decoder which is fitted to my Forney is a emotion xl. Nr8150001 ver 1.2
Thanks
Graham

Right Ive made a decision, I am going to leave the Masooth in the Forney and not bothering to fit sound into it, instead Im going to put my Forney and my climax up for sale and with the money from them either buy another Mallet or 2 Truck Shays x 2.
By doing that I will have all my locos fitted with Lenz DCC and with Hulenbrock Sound Decoders, that way everythings sorted with just the Heisler to sort out
Graham

Ok, its all done, now got 4 locos fitted witj Lenx decoders and Hulenbrock sound modules, all tested and they work great.
Two to sell ie the Forney and the Climax, and two more to finish off in the shapes of Goose no1 and Goose no 2.

Hi Graham,

Sorry I missed your reply to my post....

FYI the eMOTION XL v1.2 decoder had an LGB bus interface and not the LGB/SUSI bus interface found on current versions.

Hi Mark, thanks for the information. Ive decided I will sell my Forney (with the emotion decoder in it) and also my Climax. I will then have all my locos using lenz Gold Maxis with Uhlenbrock sound modules. It will certainly simplyfy things for me.
Thanks again for your help
Graham
