Hunter Valley (Aust) Coal Hopper

I have successfully printed and assembled my first coal hopper.
This was atrial run to find any pitfalls with the assembly.
The hopper body took nearly 24 hours to print, the chassis components took over 2 hours and the wheel, brake assembly, buffers and couplers took 1.5 hours.
A long time to print but the end result is worth it.

They look pretty good actually, I like the brake van at the end, I was going to do something similar till I found the 3D files.

HLW chassis are (were ) marvellous kitbashing bases.
I am impressed by both types of hopper wagon.
I have used these as a basis for some of my wagon bashes a good alternative to the HLW ones.
The link and pin couplers are especially good
Pasidump on;

1 FLATCAR BASE KITS NO WHEELS ……………OUT OF STOCK$ 19.95
GABLE TOPS FOR PLANK WAGONS…………EACH$ 5.95
1 PLANK WAGON TOP$ 3.95
3 PLANK WAGON TOP$ 5.95

I have purchased some of these flat car bases and they lend themselves admirably to 'bashing'; they are, as can be seen, not available at the moment however.
Maybe you could email the proprietor and see if he is expecting more?

I agree. Most of my early scratch- bashes were based on HLW mini series wagon chassis. Eg my Snailbeach hoppers.

BTW - when I heard of the demise of HLW one of my first 3D projects was to produce the parts for an equivalent wagon chassis - which I've posted on Thingiverse - 45mm gauge flat wagon / chassis by GE_Rik

Yes Jon, these are from a local source however, I have some HLW kits as well as some of these.
Must find out if any more are going to be made locally.
If not I will chase up a mate and get him to print some from the files kindly designed and posted by Rik.
cheers,
Ian

I noticed that you made the same mistake that I did when selecting the correct colour for your LCHs and the CHG like mine they were to orange. The correct Humbrol colour is "Wine" and I repainted my CHG and I had the advantage I could walk up to one about 6km from me. I've attached the picturesIMG_3004.JPGIMG_1808.JPG

The Ten Class are certainly impressive beasts - I did several trips to South Maitland when they were still hauling coal, but towards the end the loads tended to be braked bogie bulk load wagons rather than the un-braked chaldron wagons.

Sunday light-up was always a good time to arrive:

But I always found J&A Browns at Hexham had a more interesting mix of locomotives - particularly the RODs and the Kitson tank, and the borrowed 10 Class from SMR seen here hauling empties out to Stockrington colliery:

And the Kitsons were great beasts:

(excuse the quality - these are raw scans that have had no cleanup or colour correction done)

One of the best nights I've ever had on steam was in 1972 on the footplate of an ROD pushing un-braked chaldrons up to the wash plant at Hexham - oil lamps in the cab, no headlight and needless to say not enough light to take any photographs!

Cheers,

Cheers,
In addition, I did make a model based on the signal box at Neath, NSW at the same time I started making the hoppers and that still seems to be on here......
