I’m interested in building a woodland railway in Ireland. Near the sea, so I am not considering live rail. Will start with battery. With ambitions possibly to migrate to live steam after I’ve got over the landscaping effort and the cost of track!

First though, I am looking at a starter play set for my young grandchildren in Jersey, Channel Islands. Will need to be robust. Again prefer battery to live rail. Would welcome comments on the Playmobil engines: it seems that track powered engines drive four wheels, whereas battery models only drive two. Is that right and if so why?

I started with one of these, the 4018 ICE style one, and then added some of the battery powered steam outline tank engines. All were used at displays and ran well, although with these earlier models the 27mhz R/C is pretty basic (forwards-off-backwards, no sounds or lights) and has limited range outside, although I think you would need a pretty large garden to hit problems, but indoors and outdoors large metal objects can block the signal.

The later 5258 diesel uses the newer and better 28GhZ R/C and offers lights and sound. Here's a review of this version by a former GSC member:

Thread 'Review Of Playmobil 5258 Rc Freight Train Set'

Playmobil trains run on 45mm gauge “G scale” track. Playmobil used to produce track powered locos similar to LGB Toy Trains but moved on to battery powered radio control. This set uses newer and different radio control technology (28GHz) and a new and different motor block to previous Playmobil locos.

This set consists of an oval of track, loco, controller, wagon with three containers and two people. The loco is not available separately.

Caution is needed when buying the steam tank engine version because the track-powered and R/C versions are very similar.

As mentioned, I'm based in Jersey and do a few Open Days a year. Next time you're over, let me know, and we have a tea / coffee / beer, and I'll show you the railway.

I also stock a small number of LGB Start Sets on the island and I sell these at cost. I'm happy to drop them off at your kids/grandkids and offer them any advice as the family gets into the hobby.

Yes. Daft questions are the ones we can just about answer. We struggle a bit with the intelligent questions.
