Help! LGB loco 20231.10 meant to have a traction tire or not?

Hi all,

total newbie here but I’ve scoured the internet and have failed to find an answer.

We recently were gifted a second hand LGB 20231.10 locomotive and tender.

We noticed there was something circular that seemed to have disintegrated while testing the train. To my extremely limited knowledge, I assumed it was a traction tire that was just past needing a change. However when we took it to a local train shop (they deal in HO and N scale not G unfortunately, where I live we don’t have a G scale hobby shop anymore) the owner seemed to think this model didn’t have a traction tire.

I’ve attached photos, if anyone has any info on if this does or does not come from LGB with a traction tire that would be great. Even better if you have the part number as I can’t find a manual for this specific locomotive anywhere.

Many thanks in advance for any help you can provide!

Good morning, nationalcanadian. The photo of the underside of the loco shows the recess in the wheel top left of the photo that should contain a traction tyre. I have no details of the part required but they are generic, and only two of three different sizes are available, so if you measure the diameter of the wheel you should find one to fit on the internet.

Hi, nationalcanadian. TRAINL has a downloadable pdf instruction manual for the LGB 20232, it looks like the same loco as the 20231, just under a different livery. The manual gives a part number of 69184 for the traction tyre (tire), with a diameter of 46.5mm.

Hi wistow vale,
Thank you SO much! Off to order the right piece now

Welcome to the forum.

It does look like a traction tyre, but I wouldn't know where in find them in Canadia.

Maybe one of our North American members can advise....

The replacement tire is hard to mount on the rim. to make it easier, soak the LGB tire in hot water and it be comes more flexible.

Absolutely..grooved wheels are for traction tires.
Only trains, among others, in the us has them.
Havent used frog stuff. My only concern s are, 1 it must fill the groove in order to avoid undue wear to the metal edges, and of cousre, track contact, and 2, it must be uniformly level so the loco doesnt wobble.

that driver is same as 46.5 mm mogul tire.

if you have the loco manual it will list the part in the owner replaceable/maintenance section.
