It appears that the ESU smoke unit on my Kiss Mallett has an intermittent fault.

I'd like to remove the smoke unit from the loco and inspect it on the "bench"
I can't see any obvious way to access the inside of the boiler other than via the smokebox door. This way in doesn't appear to access the smoke unit mounting.
I've sent Kiss an email, but I'm wondering if anyone on here knows how or knows someone who does.

I strongly surgest you send the loco here ...i will look after it while we ponder the problem

Per my wife, I believe the British name for the proper tool is "Stillson wrench".

Well, Neil, you've had quite a lot of help so far :giggle::giggle::giggle::giggle::giggle::giggle::giggle:

Hopefully Kiss might be a bit more use :think::think::think::think:

Neil, when I had to delve inside my Kiss K36, I discovered that the designer had really thought out the need to access to the innards.
At first I thought that it would be one hell of a job dismantling all that detail etc but.... it was really easy to take the rear pony truck off and then a couple of bolts front and rear and the boiler and chassis came apart giving access to the inside of the boiler. There were two small screws to remove to allow some of the piston valve action to come away.

I am not sure if the system would be the same for your loco, but I should imagine that the folks at Kiss thought this through with all of their locos

Well yes and no.

I decided not to wait for a reply from Kiss but boldly go ahead!

It was obvious that the smoke unit was too big to fit through the smokebox door opening so I reasoned that it had to come out via the space taken by the front, pivoting, bogie motor. Removing this bogie was tedious and time consuming involving three reasonable sized screws, two springs, several small screws and quite a few tiny tiny ones. All was to no avail as it transpired that a brace in the boiler prevented the smoke unit extraction!

Shortly afterwards I accidentally discovered that the entire smokebox front complete with door and top lamp is a push fit into the boiler front !! Doh!
So whilst replacement of the locos traction motors would be a pain servicing the smoke unit, which will need wick replacement from time to time, has been well thought out.
The only tool required is a 6mm hex key to unscrew the hollow bolt in the chimney that holds the unit in place. Once this is out pull off the smokebox front, extract the unit and unplug the electrical connections.
