IMHO, as a dyed-in-the-wool Garratt man, the second one is much better and more realistic looking.

The first one wouldn't pull the skin off a rice pudding, despite it's large appearance. Based on a couple of those cheapy battery trains that the likes of Tesco and Smyths toys stock around the festive season. I kit-bashed one into a boxcab diesel a few years back. Needed a bit of lead to enable to pull three LGB 4 wheeled coaches. You've also gotta strike the right balance between added weight and what the mechanism and gearing is capable of taking. You'll soon know when hear the grinding. For my money, not worth the effort.

The second on the other hand at least uses LGB running gear. Proportionately it looks all wrong, but nothing that a creative bashing with pipe, plasticard and bits from the spares box couldn't put right. Sounds like I'm talking myself into it :D :D

Incidentally, I couldn't find a 'smiley' for 'choking'. ;) ;) ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

The Stainz Garrett could be made to look like something :-\

I thought they both looked 'orrible!
The LGB-based one might be worth it for a decent set of drive units, but you don't know how worn they are..

The Stainz based one was produced for and sold by Martin's models. I understand about 30 were sold, i think for about the same price as that one went for on eBay.

I didn't think the Martin's Models one used the standard Stainz boiler. Saw one in the flesh at Back2Bay6 a couple of years back. On sale for a customer who wanted £550 for it (I declined), but it looked way more in proportion than the one listed on ebay.

No, the Martin's models one definitely used a Stainz boiler. I know the guy who makes them and I've seen all the drawings.
