Full Page Ads

Since the forum was updated a couple of weeks ago, full page ads pop up each time I click on a topic. Then, in order to get to the topic, I must go to the upper right corner of the screen and "X" out the page with the ad. At first, I couldn't understand what was happening, as it appeared that my computer was being taken over by some sort of gremlin.

It's quite annoying. I understand that ads help pay for the forum's existence.

Hm all I have to do is scroll down and the forum starts immediately below the ads.

I get full page adverts every other time I click on a topic, a tad annoying as they never seem to be for anything useful ( we won't mention the ladies underthings ones, quite what they think I'm interested in I DON'T know) but if it helps pay for the forum, I can handle it.

I have my own profile on our lappy, but I still see ads targeted at Mizzy.

Roman dresses and Glasswells furniture, as well as houses, to name a few?

But I've not seen the ladies undercrackers yet Paul.... o_O

I wonder if the full page ads are a byproduct of the "responsive" feature of the web site (responsive means that you can get different appearance/features/resolution depending on the screen resolution of the displaying device)

My web site is responsive, but I have not ads.

Perhaps the people getting the full page ads could indicate what their display device is, i.e. if phone or tablet, the make and model... if on a pc, what is your screen resolution.

Greg, on my (Win 10) desktop I get the banner ads as mentioned, however on my iPad, when I click "New Posts" I always get a full page add to click through.

Well, if you will dabble in Apple ................:rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes:

If you're worried about the forum's existence (ref post #1) and ads bother you why not just pay for ad free?

I view the Forums on my desktop MAC. As mentioned, the ads are a full page takeover of the forum. It's almost like when you click on something and a whole new tab/screen opens up. Instead, it covers the tab/screen I was trying to view. Computer literate I am not.

Interesting as the screenshot I posted above was from my iMac which just shows a banner ad with topics underneath, all in view.

So, as I said in post #6, this can happen because the website "responds" to the perceived screen resolution, and this is not as simple as it seems.

So, it's normally a function of this, not the manufacturer of the computer.

On tablets and phones, the ability to "read" the screen resolution is a little more straightforwards, it is more complex, and subject to "misinterpretation" on PC's and Macs.

A good example is a person on a PC who has a nice 24" monitor with a "native" resolution of 1920 x 1080, BUT!! that user has adjusted the "magnification" in the display options to 250% for example.

Not all software correctly reads this... I have several applications that go nuts on my 4k screens with 150% magnification...

I'm not an expert on Macs, so do not know the exact menu to change the "apparent resolution" (as the real native resolution of the LCD never changes).

So, I think this is what you are seeing...

For the record, I read this forum on 5 different Windows 10 computers, all with different screen resolutions (3 laptops and 2 desktops).... no full page ads, but I guess I need to log out and turn off my blockers.

No doubt you are correct Greg, but I find the full page on my iPad quite annoying. I appreciate the need for advertisement revenue, however when it starts to spoil the pleasure of the site, it leave me with two alternatives:
  1. Don't visit the site on that device, therefore cutting down my presence on the site, and reducing any potential advertisement revenue.
  2. Use an ad blocker, my enjoyment goes up, but reduces any potential advertisement revenue.
Both of these have the same potential for the site, with the first the morally correct approach, and the second the best user experience.

Is anybody actually still getting full page adverts on mobile devices? as this was turned off a couple of days ago.

Not wanting to use the ad blocker, i haven't used my iPad for a few days, just checked now, and the full page ads seem to have gone :)
I am using my iPad all the time on the forum and have to say like all adds they are blocked out by my selective brain most of the time. If I get a full page one I just scroll down past it though I have looked at some off interesting adds so somehow they must get past my in head add blocker. Those that do get looked at are mostly tools or sheds, stuff like that.

With the full page ads, it's impossible to scroll down past them. How do you do it ?
