Isn't the web a wonderful thing. It depends on your view I suppose.
Four guys from all over the country and who only vaguely know each other decide to go to the depths of Germany to spot trains. Coming from Kent. Wiltshire. Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire we make out own way to Hannover and then by train to Wernigerode.
To get things off to a great start, this is the view from the hotel bedroom window.

Walking into town, we were presented with sights such as these.

Good job the HSB doesn't run all night

The works starts moving early and the locos are kept in light steam all night and they do blow off now and again. They seem to have very large safety valves that let go very noisily for a very short period of time. What a great way to interupt ones sleep:bigsmile:

Great pictures I like the converter trucks
Must be a problem with four people in the room blowing off at night....................................

We walked around the yard (its quite open) and later were given an impromptu private shed tour, the light being turned on specially.

In the morning we took the stard gauge train to Quidlinburg to visit the other side of the Harz lines - the Selketalbahn.
99-6001 - the LGB 2-6-2 - was in charge.

The selketalbahn is very twisty and steep - the grade is up from Gernrode to Sternhaus Ramburg, when it starts to decend quite sharply. Some of these stations are no more than halts in the forest for hikers.

The original rail car T1 has been lovingly restored and was trundling along the Selketalbahn but not to any published timetable. It is available for charter so that probably explains its movements.

Wonderful, only question is why did you take the std gauge to Quedlingburg rather than go the long way round on the Harz?

MORE please
Simple Paul. To go on the HSB return to Quedlingburg would mean leaving on the 07.30 train which was a railcar service. To get there and back would have taken 13 hours and nearly all on railcars. We took the std gauge train which took 40 mins and worked out that we could travel by steam on the HSB for 90% of the day which we did. That day we were traveling by train for just under 12 hours and where throughly knackered, but we enjoyed every minute.

Because its too far in one day to make the return trip. It is just possible but you spend the day on railcars.
We travelled behind 6001 nearly all day, also went up the branch to Herzgerode by railcar, also did the Hasselfelde branch (by 6001) and got all the way down to Eisfelder Talmuhle to see a 2-10-2 from Wernigerode and a railcar from Nordhausen. In addition we back tracked several station on the Karlsruhe Mallet 99 5906

Good answer  glad you had fun I'm just a bit envious even having just got back from Canada!

Steve beat me to it. have to say, some serious planing was involved in this trip (or is that serious drinking)
