hey up richie....lol abt yr comments!! lol lol lol ........im thinkin thinkin tht i mite do some layout indoor in my bedroom coz i cudnt go outdoor in winter times due of my health and penuimoina...so tht why i got new locos ere!! thinkin think...ahhh maybe one day..so mean i can chill out in my bedroom oo at tv or laptop while train runnin around..lol.lol

Not quite in the bedroom but at Warley clubrooms - 24foot by 4foot

And as mentioned elsewhere unexpectedly at the Warley NEC show this weekend. Locos in use will be B&M livery NW2, S4 and GP7 ( I try to take things seriously). I dare say James will make an appearance complete with troublesome trucks as will a couple of SD45s. The owner of the SD45s does not yet realise that SD45s are too long to shunt wagons into the Charles Ro sidings. First attempt will be interesting to watch....

Next to Kirtley we will have a few other G items on display.

SWMBO will only allow trains in the house when boxed and stored for the winter.

Kim wanted one in the livingroom. It's still not finished, but we've been able to run trains on it for over a year.

While I do not have a 'bedroom' railroad, I have, for a long time, lusted after a smallish (?) shelf layout specifically for trams/trolleys. I could not justify a large railroad to run trolleys, but feel a shelf layout, typically say 20 fot in length and around one foot in width. One could then integrate a catenary system without fear of tripping unsuspecting visitors.

The railroad would be 'L' shaped and follow the walls. One would integrate the infamous 4 foot curves, or even less, to bridge the intersection of the walls. A simple painted backdrop with a few low relief buildings would finish off the scene.

Only downfall would be justifying another railroad with one already occupying the backyard.

My layout is indoors uses R1 curves. I have designed several 10' x11'ish bedroom size layouts including one using 8'a diameter curves, but I cannot load the plans from my Schmart-phone. If your interested I will try to post some planes this weekend.

I found some older pix of the AV markIII from 2008 in case you're wanting ideas. It was a 5' x 8' tabletop, with a peninsular spur to the 'mine'. One nice thing about indoors is you can work with materials and delicate details that would fall apart or get broken outside.

The ballast was just cheap cat litter, held down with diluted white glue. A lot of the figures are Lemax, which have tended to fade outdoors, and Just Plain Folk, which have held up better. Most of the buildings are Piko "Wild West/Pleasantown with the false fronts gabled. They are nice indoors because they have a small footprint. The forest is several sizes/brands of artificial Christmas trees bought on clearance at the craft store on Boxing Day.
You can do a lot in a small space inside. A bunch of mini scenes to draw the eye away from the trains, and part of the loop hidden behind scenery (like trees) will help give the illusion that the layout is bigger than it really is. Short cars and small locos really help, too.

Published most of these before but have another look. The main reason for the hanging railway was because as you can see the hands on level was occupied by the "00" layout - that is now no more, so really I could undo the hanging one, but it took a lot of effort to build and I'm not keen on undoing it. There's little scenery on it, never got round to that. Apart from one Peco G54 point the points are LGB R1 as are all the curves, can run GP diesels on it, doubt if I could do SDs though.

I must hold my hand up as an indoor layout builder; you can see the plan of my line in post #28 on page 2 of "Making a New Start". Apart from the turnouts that are R1, there's only one other in view (beside the Barber Shop at Hogwood); otherwise all are R2 and I even sneaked in a couple of R3. However I'm working in a loft so probably a little bigger than a bedroom.

However if you modelled a Feldbahn with the smallest locos and wagons, then all R1 curves would look OK. Some years ago I found a website belonging to a Dutch G-scale modeller with some small indoor plans - sorry, just can't recall his name, but if it comes back, I'll add it here.

Hi again Steven. Plywood is quite good for the shelf - you don't have to use heavy stuff if you put a piece (or two pieces) of plained timber underneath (glue it and use nails or woodscrews). MDF sags under its own weight - as will other sheet materials if no proper support.

As regards plug size, brown plugs and 8 gauge wood screws go together (I think 7mm masonry bit gives the right size. Drill slightly deeper than the plug and allow the screw to go in 35mm or so - if just standard steel shelf brackets that will be the screw length or thereabouts. If your brackets are about 650 to 750mm apart that should be OK.

Wood depends on whether you want it to look like furniture or just be utilitarian.

For much of mine, I used inexpensive "whiteboard" (pine)Since I didn't have a table saw to cut up a sheet of plywood. The ceiling hangers are oak, as a friend cut the pieces for me from old stuff he had. As you could see in the pix I posted, I still need to varnish the lot. I also made use of those veneer covered particleboard shelf pieces since a neighbor was tossing several of them out.

I put my wall brackets on about 3 foot centers - it seems to be staying put and not sagging. (every other wall joist in frame construction) Maybe not the 'best' way, but it worked.

Brackets stained with vinegar with steel wool in the vinegar
It took me four application of the vinegar mix to get the weathered gray look I wanted

Bridges are five foot long over stairway and in front of window
I built the bridges in adult metal/welding shop class at our local high school
We had seen the bridges in a Hobby Shop in Denver at s cost of over $200.00 each for four foot bridges
I built four bridges for $20.00 plus learning how to weld.
Two four footers and two five footers
The bridges are built out of 1/2 sq tube.
Rattle can paint gray silver hammer tone with a little flat black
