Digital sound in LGB 20755

A mate has one of these budget electric Bo-Bos with the new Marklin sound chip factory fitted as standard.
Only the whistle sound works when running on his LGB MTS III system yet the running noises work fine on analogue.
My interpretation of the instructions suggests that not all features will work properly with older control systems and turning off the "mfx" protocol using CV 50 may help.

I tried this but still no sound on digital.

However I noticed that when I reset CV 50 to 2 and re-read it to confirm it states 3. Similarly when I tried to reset to the default value, 10, re-reading it states a value of 11! I'm using an LGB programming module with Massoth software as my computer runs Windows 8. I wonder if this has any relevance to the problem.

Does anyone know how to get this sound chip to work on MTH III?

I suspect that you will need to switch the sounds (amplifier) on when using it in digital mode, you may also need to "start the engine" too. Not sure what functions you would need to press to do this (Massoth decoders use F6 to switch the amp on/off and F5 for startup/shutdown).

May also be worth trying F1 or F8 to get the sound on or off. Once you have done this the Horn could be tried by possibly pressing F2. Not all sound chips use the same F's for each sound, the little F's!

Not sure if this will help, but I am currently experimenting with my new LGB 24741 that comes factory fitted with the new new Marklin decoder with sound. I am driving this with Digitrax Super Chief DCC as I feel most stateside products are more concerned with nmra standards.

Anyway, on my marklin decoder, I needed to ensure that function F8 is on to get any sound (eg whistle, bell, etc) AND to get operating sounds (eg chuffing) I needed to put F6 on as well.

Changing CV 50 bit 3 (mfx off/on) seems to make no difference but that must be down to the commands sent by each dcc controller type, in my case Digitrax. There is also bit 2 (analog dc) but no other bits to worry about in CV 50.

Also, CV 63 controls overall sound volume (range 0-255, default 255) and loads of other CV's each controlling individual sound volume. Some 10 individual sounds.

you should not need to switch MFX off as the decoder will first check for MFX signals and use that protocol if found, if not it will check for DCC signals and use them.

One thing I've found with the MLGB decoder is that you have to pay attention to each sound to see if it is triggered momentarily or latching. For example, for the Allegra you need to make the conductor whistle momentary or the decoder won't let the train move because if left in latching mode it keeps the function active. I'm using the MTS111 with navigator so it's simple to set each function. My guess is that you need to do this with yours and it should be fine. At first I never like the new decoder but once I figured them out I really like them.

As an off topic, what do you think of quality of loco for running speed control and for visual detail and finish? :)

At the possible risk of appearing to be rude I'll decline to comment.
I don't feel qualified, the loco isn't mine. I've only read part of the instructions and played with some of the CVs on my programming track.

No problem, I understand. Later today I'm off to a dealer that has them in stock so I'll be able to see the detail and finish first hand.

Its not on serial mode. is it?
