`Connie` now started.

Riograndad

Model Railroading, boats and oil painting,
Country flag
I`ve posted work on the crew in another thread but now as started on the loco itself I might as well pull the two together, engineer and fireman now painted in new colours, bandana and oily rag in back pocket now on the engineer which covers the nasty gap between his neck and shoulders and allows his head to be positioned. Now for the loco,I must say I love the loco to bubbles, cracking looking model(IMO) but lacks a few things I think should be there so started to add some little mods to the cab interior as a starting point,,,, the lack of a throttle,so made a a quadrant style to represent something to make it move out of scraps of plasticard shapes and a couple of bolt mouldings which ties up with the engineers hand,to make it stop a brake handle was added and so the crew can see whats going on a few gauges added together with a few extra pipes covered with heatshrink to represent insulation and to join up the cab and boiler pipework gaps in the cab, lastly the bell and whistle ropes were extended with florist wire as this will stay rigid and will sway from side to side when the loco is moving.pics taken while first coat drying and the light was fading so sorry about the quality:oops:cab no and railroad name also added.Still some "bits" to add;) crew2 004.jpg crew2 007.jpg crew2 002.jpg

I kept the crew pic separate from the update pics of the loco so far, slow but steady progress being made,on the original post I said that really only needed some cosmetics as overall it was in pretty good condition. Some simple bit n bobs added, the loco/tender Yellow Pine lettering all gone and C&RG workaday black and white livery started, some more lettering and numbers to go on(e g 15 on back up light)the cab has already been covered in a previous post so enough said about that, some more to do to the loco such as there is no hatch cover on the sand dome(?),armrests for the crew on the window frames as the slide windows are going, some rivet/bolt detail for the pilot etc,but the tender needed more work to bring it up to scratch,I extended the frames outwards with styrene strip to allow the white line along the tender to be added to match the cab,new rear steps were needed as one missing and one broken, new coal load added together with hungry rails around the bunker and a cut down shovel as if embedded in the coal and the front bunker boards were missing so threw something together to cover that little problem,so far so good and at least i`m pleased with her overall appearance so far,I have classified as C20 as think i should be between a C19 and C21:):)CONNIE 18 11 004.jpg CONNIE 18 11 003.jpg CONNIE 18 11 001.jpg CONNIE 18 11 005.jpg CONNIE 18 11 006.jpg CONNIE 18 11 008.jpg CONNIE 18 11 009.jpg

Oh yes! The bee's knees!

Thanks Mick, must see about some sound when its finished.

That looks very nice. I'm beginning to wonder if there'll be any "stock" Connies left after everybody has bashed theirs. I've done mine as a faux C21 with RGS sunrise emblems. The K-27 snow ploughs are an easy fit and hide the l-o-o-ong gap between smokebox and pilot. Max

One of mine is stock - ish, but the other has a K27 pilot which shortens the overhang.

I like Rio Grandad's tender mods - the standard tender leaves something to be desired.

I've also seen a mod whereby the front headlight is moved off the smoke box door to the normal position in front of the chimney, and I am tempted ..........:think:

Love that loco.
Love the outside frame and counterweights.
Very narrow gauge looking.

Thanks for the comments,I put the armrests on today but they alone not worth a pic,,i agree Max,I wonder how many locos are actually "stock items"are left,,Rhino, the tender is very plain and to be honest I was a little disappointed with it,it just needed some more details added(IMO),as I said in earlier post hungry rails to stop the coal load ending up on the tender deck and as for the rear ladder(to be changed)I think it would be almost impossible for a crew member to get on the deck as its too close to the tender wall and theres the lip around the top to climb over together with no grab irons/handrail to hold on to,north face of Everest may be an easier option, as for the headlight, there are many bashes out there with the top headlight change but for me the headlight will stay as is as i like the Mexican/South American "feel" of the loco and no plow is on the cards for this `ol lady;).Steve, counterweights were the draw to this loco I must confess,it was going to be a Connie or K27 whichever I came across first, both would be great but storage is becoming a problem,,,,sez SWMBO,,but must say in her defence,,she does have a point:blush::blush::blush::blush:

The addition of an air tank and associated pipe runs on the rear of the tender give it a bit of a "Colorado" feel. With regards to this loco being a seeming favourite for bashing, how long till stock "Yellow Pine Lumber" versions hove up on Evilbay for ludicrous opening bids and the prefix - RARE ! Max

Yes Max totally agree with the extra air tank, not on the cards for Connie but maybe on my C&S Mogul at a later date, not sure yet and as for Yellow Pine stock items on evilbay listed as Rare, the way they are being bashed in numbers will probably read VERY RARE with prices to match!!:rofl:

A little more done, started on the sand dome cover, simple use of a few scraps of plasticard bits n bobs a few nut /bolt castings,I used a penny coin to get the round shape as about the right size, not fitted on the loco yet as still needs some tidying up.dome 004.jpg

CONNIE 014.jpg A long time since she was removed from the box,but a little more done today, new ladder (first pic)for the tender and grab rail on the rear deck but bad pic as the light was all wrong,,some rivet detail on the front pilot, sand dome attached now and a few more bolt moldings added here and there, nearly done now(at last)got to get some more dry rub numbers for the rear back up light and ran out of "Es" for the `keep off `on the pilot beam, glass in the 4 panel side cab windows to go back in but the slide windows are not going back in as armrests fitted to frame and I broke one of the piggin`hinges on the firemans side cab front door:banghead:,,,iCONNIE 010.jpg CONNIE TENDER 007.jpg CONNIE 011.jpg t will need very slight weathering around the motion/wheels to pick out the details, possibly use the airbrush on that as I think my normal use of rattle can weathering may be a little too heavy, and of course thinking about sound for her.
