Coffee stirrer picket fence jig and a quick brick wall

Tony

Model railways
Ive not given sizes of stuff used as that depends on you

Here is a jig ive made for the making of picket fencing from coffee stirrers again this is a guide im sure you can make yours slightly different.
Made from off cuts of wood and a hand full of "the right sized" nails as spacers.. i laid a number of coffee stirrers along the jig with a nail between each one then clamped the nails in place with another peice of wood

no nails added to secure the nails

and another scrap of wood to seal it all together and act as a stand when not laid down....I then added the blue tape as a guide for placing the precut coffee stirrers ...it also stops them sticking to the wood when you glue it......when they are all laid out and glued i cover them with a sheet of plasticard (again to stop then sticking) and a plank of wood that then gets clamped in the vice over night

002-1.jpg

and you end up with this .....i havnt made any fence posts yet as i havnt got anything small enough

While im here the edging to the platform is simple as anything (allthough not in line) and not painted DOH! im also using it as road side kerbing and another bonus il show in the last picture

Its made by clamping a few lengths of square wood in a vice i bought a ton of it cheap from local wood auction

019-4.jpg

Then using a set square i marked out the kerb size i wanted

020-4.jpg

You could use a saw to cut the line across to form the gaps but this will leave a ruff edge and take of ever so........

out comes MR Angle grinder fitted with a thin metal cutting disc you only need the weight of the grinder to lightly score a line which is smooth and it takes seconds.....If you want to make kerbs then you need to unclamp everthing and turn each one 90% and line up and repeat as seen in the length on the one on the bench

006-3.jpg

But this lot im doing for another cunning plan

008-3.jpg

because if you then stagger each length in turn and take a fraction of each edge you get a cheap brick wall

That's awesome Tony! I've been trying to come up with a jig for coffee stirrer fencing and your's fits the bill perfectly. Thanks Tony :D

Good idea for the jig Tony  Makes it far less tedious and a lot more accurate!

Nice work Tony love the jig for the picket fence

Look I often see posts (hah) about using coffee stirrers for fencing etc. Where do you guys get the coffee stirrers from? Do you hang around coffee bars for days on end grabbing cast off stirrers? Or do you drink gallons of the stuff? I drink one or two cups of java a day, and being a couthy sort of person, I use a teaspoon, and you can't make a fence out of teaspoons, anyway, I wash the teaspoon and reuse it

Wow Tony, Mate if I had the authority I'd give you an award for using some thinking out side the fence so to speak. Very clever He says as he ripps your design off...

Thanks lads  Hadnt thought of the no nails nailing the nails thats very clever as for coffee stirrer supplies yes Ebay is proberly the cheapest but you have to watch the sizes as there are more than one width...... Being a Night Trucker i just put the word out a while ago for any drivers stopping for coffee if they could save some...that was a couple of years ago and even now i have lads handing me bags full one mate even asked for a bag from Mcdonalds and then went round and cleaned the place out :rolf::rolf: (i dont endorse this type of behavior) but they are the better ones for buildings as they are slightly wider than Coffee nation that are better for fencing...... shell garage are also very good but best stick with ebay there not that expensive anyway

Tony

Ps as soon as i buy a new chop saw il post some pics of my wooden footpath paving idea using thin cut battern laid on their side sanded and painted.... my old saw doesnt cut straight and the bearings gone but the idea works well

i just went to McD... (at an hour with few customers) and kindly explained to the manager my need for coffee stirrers and my hesitation to rob them.
he phoned the central office and got me the phone number of the company they buy the stirrers from.

from that company i bought a box with 10000 stirrers in it. (i didn't count them)
if i remember right, i payed a little more than the local worth of 10 pound.

i don't expect to buy another box before reencarnation.

I've seen large bags of coffee stirrers in a couple of craft and art shops, so might be worth checking you local ones too.

Good thinking Korm. Not sure what reaction one would get from a UK manager. Probably told to go forth and multiply....:rolf::rolf:
or even to have sex with your footwear....:rolf::rolf::rolf::rolf:

It would be useless asking in Australia as they all seem to speak Arabic....

In Aust we have $2 shops (the same as what I believe are pound shops in UK) and I bought mine there, bags of 200 all different sizes and colours.
They were in the craft section
