Cleaning track connectors with Coca Cola?

All my tracks are at least second hand, if not more hand.

As a test I put half a liter of Coke in a tray and put rails in it, only with the ends in the coke. They're standing upright so to say.

I'm curious this will work out OK... Hope the inside of the connectors and the bare pieces of track will become clean.

Anyone done this before? Or maybe one has other tips to clean the electrical joints of used tracks?

It will clean them, but will take time, your better off with plain phosphoric acid, which is the active ingredient in Coke, often sold as industrial rust remover.

As I think I've mentioned on here before, we use large jars of white vinegar as an "organic" weedkiller (not that I'm some bearded, sandal-wearing Greenist fan of hand-knitted lentils, but we have two dogs running around...) - does a great job on the paths, though the place does smell like a Chippy for few days after.... ;)

Tomato soup, seriously not kidding.....

Yebbut white vinegar is usually available in SWMBO's cupboards :smoke::smoke::smoke:
We must have strange cupboards, currently under the sink, is ferric chloride, phosphoric acid, sulphur, and sulphuric acid

You would not want to get any of that mixed up. I had a mouth ulcer a while back and the Chemist recommended Anbesol. I said 'Blimey, you wouldn't want to get that mixed up with Anusol.... all your gums would shrink.....'

Er, phosphor underneath water? :wondering:
Just for a laugh put a drop of the H2SO4 onto some of the FeCl3, then run away before SWMBO comes to see where the dead rat is.
I used to use the FeCl3 in platemaking at the first printers I worked at, even then it was regarded as dodgy stuff although that didn't stop me from eating my butties without washing my hands first

In my youth..
The Sodium Chlorate, mixed with sugar, I kept hidden in the toy-cupboard.. This was in the alcove next to the fireplace in the living room!!
:eek::eek::rolleyes::mad:

"Cillit Bang'' is quite good stuff for removing crud from metalwork. Useful for cleaning PCBs. Sometimes found in the household store cupboard.

Going back to the original post, Henri - how well did your Coke experiment work on your track....?
It's been a couple of days, any improvement?

Jon.

Cillit bang also contains phosphoric acid.

Tomato Ketchup.

Or HP sauce, which is now no longer made in the UK, but in the Nederlands!

Works the same way as Cola, but is thicker and easier to apply....
