Part 1 of 2

I decided that steam locomotives would need replenishment at Gernise End Station, on the Claptowte Railway, and therefore the location would require a water tower, water crane and coaling stage. Having looked at various manufacturers’ offerings, I decided on the water tower by Kippo models. It was not a difficult decision having three of their buildings already, the station building, toilet block and a lineside building converted into the goods office. As for as the water tower, I was impressed by the height, appearance, the excellent quality of the resin moulding and the very reasonable cost.

I purchased one tower for Gernise End, but due to a happy accident, I ended up with two kits. I decided to add the same basic loco servicing infrastructure to a pair of loco sidings at Phidell Yard, so the second water tower will be put to good use.

The picture below shows the part assembled model on the workbench. I have embellished the basic kit with the addition of a ladder, cut from a piece of ½” square wire mesh, in the same way that I made ladders for my basic signal kits. I also added a wire handle to the tank access hatch.

The completed water towers. The first tower is the one destined for Gernise End Station and has been further embellished with the addition of various printed card signs, including a name board for the station. A few tufts of grass have sprouted from wind blown seeds, in some damp areas. Glazing added to the windows.

The second tower is destined for Phidell Yard and has been similarly embellished to the first tower.

Those do indeed look very nice, and well painted. I have a slightly damaged water crane which I picked up second hand, so your photos may spur me into action repairing and painting mine. Could I ask a question of the group. What was behind the door, was it used as a toilet for the railway workers, or did the 'room' have some other use I have not thought of? Thanks in advance to anyone who solves my curiosity. David Lewis.

A little 'free' storage, perhaps?

More likely, the feed into, and outlet from, pipes and stopcock. - It would provide a little protection from the coldest of temperatures.

There may even have been a rudimentary stove, to stop the tank freezing in the worst of the weather?

In colder parts of the world, they would place a brazier, or fire dragon, under the water cranes too, to prevent them from freezing.

If you have a brazier, shouldn't there be a vent for fumes and smoke....
