This isn`t really a review as such, though I`m happy to provide further info on anything shown, on request.
In a post on another thread a couple of days ago, I mentioned that a pre-Christmas trip down to Felixstowe, and a visit to The Treasure Chest second-hand bookshop there, netted me an excellent haul of specialist railway books - mostly in German; in response to a couple of requests, here they are:

Oh good, the photos worked - I haven't posted any since the last forum upgrade, so I wasn't 100% sure they would!

Anyway, all the books are secondhand, but all in good-to-excellent condition, and most were quite reasonably priced with the one exception of the Rugen book - which is so lovely that I really wanted it, and fortunately the Memsahib agreed to add it to my Xmas pressies.... :) It has full info on almost anything you could ever want to know about the Rugen lines - track and station plans, locos, goods wagons, passenger stock - all with accurate scale drawings - and it's simply lovely!

The various Harz books have a certain amount of duplication of pics, obviously, but they are still very nice to have - the small volume second in from top left on the second pic is a bilingual publication, German in one column on each page and English in the second column. The other three Harz books in the second pic make a set of 3, covering the overall Harz network, the Selketalbahn and the Brocken line.

Perhaps the most useful for the LGB-fetishist is the Sachsen book - again lots of photos, scale drawings etc, and makes a nice change from all the Harz ones.

These were the only rail-related things I got this Christmas, but I think it was a worthwhile selection.... :)

Thanks Alan - I'd not seen it before, but yes, it's a lovely book!

To all our German speakers / readers..

I am trying to find some more information on the 'rocket' / mast at the Brocken..
We have a model of this with the 'Harz' layout, but it is a little basic, and it may well be over-size..

Am after closer shots of the three platforms at low level..
Whether it is a communications mast, or a mock-up of a 'V' weapon..
And if there is a schematic plan, even a small information-type thing, with an overall height of the structure that would be brilliant.

Thanks in advance.

I'm pretty sure it's a mast/antenna, Phil - a relic of when the station on the Brocken summit was an East German/Soviet intelligence monitoring installation. I'll have a look through all the books I have on the subject (the ones in the pictures, plus a few others) and see what I can find - don't know if there will be a plan, but there may be some good photos.....

Phil - I just googled "Harz Brocken listening post" and got a lot of info, if you click on "images" there is a mass of pics including this one:

http://www.senderfotos-bb.de/histor/brocken51.jpg

which seems to be from the Cold War era rather than modern (I would think that pics of it from that era are few and far between, for obvious reasons....)

I hope that may help a little?

Here's something useful: looks like the red and white mast is actually a TV and telecomms tower, and it's 123 metres tall.....

and also....

I know nothing about this particular location, but can confirm that telecomms masts - under ITA rules - are meant to be painted red/white. Bitter experience - at vast cost I had to organise the repainting of a 400 ft mast at Bacton, Norfolk, UK, which had been left plain galvanized since 1967...and I bet the bludgers missed a few bits, but having no head for heights, I didn't check....that's what binoculars were invented for :)

Good selection of books....in Oz, you have to search high n low to find ANYTHING to do with railways....

Thanks Jon, plenty to follow up on there.. First pic is the best 'plan view' so far..

The model might be something near then.. 123 metres, divided by 22.5, equals 5.47!!!!!!!
:( :( :( That means 'our' model, at about 1.8m, doesn't even come close!! :( :( :(
That, coupled with the ceiling height we have, is a problem Houston! ::)

May have to either crop it. - As in, it goes through the roof.
OR,
Use the top section to model the building with the smaller tower on it.

Hmmm.. Bottom section to ceiling, then top section on a new building..
I have to have a listening-post building, just so I can drop the phrase "stasi mosque" into conversations. ;) :D :D
