Perhaps so, but Jade isn't really a child any more....

Scarily, you can drive at 16 here - and insurance is cheap(er) as there is basically no car theft.....

Count yourself lucky that you don't live in my area, where insurance fraud is rife. My oldest boy passed his test 6 months ago at age 25 and the cheapest quote he could get was over £4k. I enquired about putting him as a name driver on my insurance so he could drive my Honda Civic and was quoted an additional £5,500!(I only pay £510). Needless to say I declined the offer. He has since made enquiries about getting insured on his own account but with me as a name driver and is getting quotes below £3k so he may at last be able to get on the road.

Steve; that was no Cossie but a B plate 5 door 1.6 Sierra.. albeit only five years old at the time, the car that is not me ;)

I made a mistake too; the Mrs eldest is paying £3k fully comp on his 1.3 Fiesta not the £1300 I thought it was; still saves him drinking it all down the NAFFI :crying:

The answer, is available on the Isle of Man.....:rolf:

Hi Steve

I've just turned 17 too and I wish I could find insurance for that little, I'm currently looking at £2000 for my '65 MG Midget (1.1L) or £4000 for my Mum's 1.4 fiesta. That's for fully comprehensive off of confused.com I think I might get a little off the midget through a specialist, but I from all the people I've talked to at school and all the schemes I've herd the only way is to grudgingly take the cost and not put a toe out of line once you've got it.

Forgot to mention though, there are a couple things i've seen people with; One is a limited milage policy, which takes the cost down considerably.

The second is to have a black box fitted to your car and a policy that restricts you to driving between 6am and 11pm. A friend of mine has this and I think it lowered the cost of his quite considerably, though it costs £150 to fit the box.

Just a thought, when I had a kit car the best was with Aidrian Flux, who is a specialist insurance company.
Not saying they will be any good but it may be worth a look - the website is at

What about 3rd party, fire and theft policies? Thats all i could afford when i started driving 25 years ago ...

Cor you had fire and theft...i just had the minimum of third party but then the bangers i drove nobody would nick em and they leaked that much that they would never catch fire as the upholstery was always wet:brokeheart:

For musket the dog - have you tried a company that specialises in classic car insurance for your MG? It's usually a lot cheaper. My kit car (2.0L Royale Sabre) is with KGM, fully comp, with my son as named driver (but 7500 limited mileage) for £216.

I use Hagerty's for my MGB GT, they're very good - a resounding £85 a year.

Soorrrry Steve - this is one of those very few posts when you're glad you're old !

I hate to swear but WTF I can't believe the insurance cost could be so much!! I mean the cost not what they charge. when my boys got there permits at 17 they both were added as riders to my policy at a cost of $55.00 when they passed there tests they got there own policy's but as a family plan, Phil got a Neon sport thing, cost $78 a month fully comp and Andrew got a Discovery for $68.00 a month!! it's considerably cheaper now of course as there No claims built up............................Oh and my 32ft RV cost's me $40.00 a year!!!!
Jeez even my $2 million Garage owners policy is only $1700 a year.......................I think you need a revolution July 4th seems a good time for one........................
