Bridge building on the cheap!

Re:Bridge building on the cheap!

Thanks Richie. Its a splodge and bodge but they needed something to improve them. Its been time consuming - about 8 hours work - but very therapeutic:rolf:

Re:Bridge building on the cheap!

Darned spiffing Mick. Just greeeat...really love the connecting arch bridge as well.

Re:Bridge building on the cheap!

I protest :nerd:

the thread title is now inaccurate :thinking:

Only jealous really - I WANT a swing bridge :crying::crying::crying::crying:

Re:Bridge building on the cheap!

Thank you all for your kind comments. Now all I need to do is USE it! Plenty of testing and loco maintenance comimg up if the weather stays fine:thumbup:

Re:Bridge building on the cheap!

Got my first chance, today, to further test the bridges and extension. When I made the bridges I sort of made allowances for keeping the 45 tonner intact. I say sort of because, in reality, I had never (recently) measured its width:rolf:

I had a notion that if I allowed for the track at a 3" centre from the bridge 'steelwork' things would be OK.

They were, but only just:thumbup: I was always taught that "near enough is not good enough" :rolf: but it this case it will have to be! 3 - 4mm clearance from the sides ...

So if that thing can get through then most other large things will make it too (radii excepted:rolf:)

Re:Bridge building on the cheap!

Enjoyed watching this project develop.... and the end product has lived up to your usual standards Mick:admire:

Great, ingenious work AND on a budget

Congratulations again Mick

Re:Bridge building on the cheap!

Thanks Rob - got to knuckle down now and create my official opening crowd! Its more time consuming than I thought it would be. I know how I want it to be but somehow I don't think I'll be able to delver according to my wants:rolf:

In a straight line, that 'thing' is about as big as it gets :bigsmile::bigsmile::bigsmile:

Aha - I discern from your pictures that you have an earlier version of the 'thing' with close off exhaust outlets.

Mine is a later version with open outlets and smoke units (now removed). However, because of all the complex electronics that I have inserted after having ripped out all of the Bachmann complex electronics :nerd::nerd: , I have had to cap off the exhausts at the bottom, in order to afford protection in case of any extraneous rain drops disappearing straight down the pipe

As a battery powered 'thing', it could be used in many weathers

Re:Bridge building on the cheap!

I left it out of the box yesterday - I keep thinking about altering it - lowering the cab and narrowing it (that's a recurring fault of mine, thinking!). However, a fellow forum member is after one so I have PM'd him.

Yes, your battery conversion intrigued me and gave food for thought. My trouble is I don't do much bashing and maybe I should. It's the 'deep pockets and short arms' syndrome:rolf::rolf:

I have considered using the bogies (and the smoke unit for an Annie) for a couple of projects which would provide two new locos and restore another but.......

Re:Bridge building on the cheap!

Having been playing with my 'thing' today :- I wandered over and watched it cross the bridge

I was wondering whether it's going to come down to a clearance competition :bigsmile:

How close is your loco to the bridge sides :laugh::laugh:

And before anybody forgets that this is a family forum, remember that we are talking clearances; the essence of clearance is that nothing quite touches :cool::cool:

Re:Bridge building on the cheap!

:rolf::rolf: Its only just. Actually 3 - 4mm (thank goodness there are no rivets in the way). The cab clears a branch/trunk by about the same on the turning loop!

Re:Bridge building on the cheap!

Actually, it looks like I've lost :Looser::Looser::Looser:

5 mm one side and 4 mm the other, measured to the cabsides at roof level.

But only by a whisker!:rolf::rolf::rolf:

you wouldn't want to stick your head out of the window there

Re:Bridge building on the cheap!

Could be that Ian has ACTUALLY won the minmum clearance! He's got next to nowt on both sides whilst mine has 150mm on the other side!

Re:Bridge building on the cheap!

And, I'm just ordering some cabside name plates - that'll take another 0.5 mm off each side
