I've been using Brandbright kits for some time and believe I've just about got it right. Saw off the laser-cut axle boxes and modify the chassis beams to take Accucraft W&L axle boxes and wheels. Result sits a little higher and runs so smoothly.

I've only used the matchboard coach kits. What I like about them is that they just give you the basics in an affordable package. You can then scratch build all your own additional features on to them. The W&L axle boxes and wheels are not cheap but the running is so superior to the plywood with top-hat bearings that it is well worth it.
