It really depends on the weight and length of cars, radius and banking of track. 4 would be short for it to happen unless you have a heavy car on the end of the train.

I find that using USA Trains / San Val solid brass wheels helps a lot, adding a lot of weight at low level.

A tip. When investigating derailment issues, ALWAYS check the track first before playing around with the rolling stock.
I've seen guys dismantle locomotives, make modifications, order spare parts in order to correct a derailment cause, when all along, it was a kink in a rail joint, or simple twist (uneven levels) on the track.

Hi All, my first post. I agree wholly with the above post. Even with short LGB cars we were having an issue...after watching the cars slowly, I identified the problem bit of track. Most of the curve is slightly superelevated by dint of the floating track and its response to our summer heat, and just the changing nature of ballast (in our case: crushed gravel). I simple put a bit of gravel under the outer rail on about a 6 inch section.

Regarding scale lengths...we are mostly interested in smaller European wagons and flatbed based cars. However, my son has a few longer cars with bogies (these did not navigate the curve, but do now after the repairs). They aren’t quite full scale length...perhaps 40 feet when scaled up. They look great. He is now after a small bullnose like an F3.

I do think longer cars look a bit off, especially the coaches (as pictured later in the thread). That said, to each his own and be merry!

I have been trying to ID that coach with little luck. Length wise it streches over almost 3 R1 points as 300 mm each so that would pretty near match LGB Continetal SG Coaches at 800mm. Not found that design in LGB or Piko as yet so a bit of a mystery. But one thing is certain, you need to allow a large sized Kinetic Envelope with R1 Points and Curves BOTH sides.

I run bogie vehicles on R1/R2 curves with no problems. Medium sized LGB locos and coaches work fine and don't look too out of place.



However, if your coaches are more than 2 feet long, as with this Frying Hamburger, then it can look a little odd on the tighter curves!

If your bogie vehicles are no more than say 50 cm, they'll be fine....

Must say some more on this. LGB, possibly Piko and perhaps some others will work fine on R1 because they are designed to. However certain RIP off brands though delivered in boxes with R1 Plastic Track and though running well enough will not fare so well with some of the heavier loads behind them unmodified. But with Metal Wheels and proper LGB Couplings a different story, perhaps some more added weight as well. These will help these products a lot as I have found with Modified and Unmodified ones that I have owned.

Your memory serves you fairly well Jon - I only bought two! They're 817mm (32ins) long which is slightly longer than the LGB ones at 800mm. The livery is Alex (which I believe is part of Arriva's European operations). Piko also did a Taurus electric loco in matching livery. I Googled the full-size loco and coaches and the models are pretty accurate. As for the LGB DB coaches I've amassed five so far. Together they make a fine sight behind a red BR218 but the seven coach length is stretching it a bit - literally!
