Gizzy

A gentleman, a scholar, and a railway modeller....

In a couple of weeks time, Mizzy and I are heading to Northern France and Belgium. We will be based just south west of Ostend.

We will be using the Kurst Tram and visiting Bruges whilst there, but do any of our Belgian members know of any good model shops in the area, especially those that might have G Scale please?

Thanks in anticipation....

Can't help with any model shops, but I would like to wish you and Missy an enjoyable vacation.

I've travelled that area quite extensively Gizzy (although not since the pandemic). To be honest there is little in the way of 'proper' model shops and even less with anything remotely G scale. I found one shop in Oostende -

Modeltreinen Guy Vyncke

Vlaanderenstraat 76, Ostend, Belgium, 8400

It's just a few metres back from the promenade. It had some expensive gauge 1 stock, but I don't recall seeing any LGB or other makes on my holidays other than a few odd bits on the secondhand market in Rouen.

Last time I was in Belgium (1999) I spied a model railway shop by thee tramline on leaving Oostend heading towards De Panne. It may have been leaving Niewport on the Harbour/Sea side of the Tram Line. Never investigated in side but if you do the Tram trip from Oostend to De Hanne worth looking out for, Sea side of the line probably the best views.

Thanks chaps!

We are staying near Ostende close to the Kurst Tram, so we'll check that shop out.

We are travelling on Le Shuttle and on our first day we will visit the heritage railway at Aa, before crossing the border to visit Ypres....

Hope I am not sending you on a wild goose chase, was a long time ago…..

I passed through Belgium in 1988, so I am not much help ;)

Thanks Mike,

I've Googled his shop and it seems that it still exists, so we'll go and have a look whilst we are there....

While you're there perhaps you should treat Mizzy to something from the Leonidas Chocolate shop which is less than 5 minutes walk away.

If you haven't done it before, and the timings work, I would urge you to attend the Last Post ceremony at the Menin Gate in Ypres. It occurs at 8pm every evening; to say it is moving is an understatement.

Yes, that's on our to 'do list' Patrick....

There are not so many model shops left in Belgium thanks to internet platforms and I don't know what Vincke has. I used myself to have a model shop but never managed to buy LGB material. Anyway, there is a shop in Waterloo, where I have been a few times. They have new and second hand material and I have already bought from them. Here is the address of their website and you can see what they have.

Should you consider to visit Waterloo Lion, it might be worth going there as well. I would contact them to see what they have to offer and Waterloo being a cosmopolite town there should be no problem with the language.

Hope this can be of help.

Back in the day, when the tunnel was first opened, we traveled by Eurostar to Brussells - the only high speed bit was from Calais to Lille, where we branched north through going on through Belgium and noticed many train stations that have familiar names, often given to army barracks in this country to recognise their battle honours. I forget most of them now (partly because I don't visit the UK barracks quite so frequently) but Ypres was definitely one.
