Being notified of being out bid after the auction has finished?

It didn't really matter as I had bought what I wanted yesterday.

It's a bit galling though when notification of a higher bid comes in after the auction has finished. What chance then of putting in a higher bid? Seems frightfully unfair on the seller.

Notification is automatic from eBay and if the outbid was seconds before the end then the notification will be after it has finished. Can seem strange but these things happen with automated responses. EBay do not have it in for you personally.

The higher bid may come in just a few seconds before the end of the auction if someone is using a sniping tool of some sort so there's no time for the previous highest bidder to be informed. It looks as if what happens is the higher bid comes in a second(s) before end of auction, the auction ends and the ending of the auction overides the message to the beaten bidder because he/she can do nothing and the message "auction ended". Then the "you have been outbid" message goes out to unsuccessful previous highest bidder. It's a logical enough set of steps but, as you say frustrating, although if you had received the outbid message by the time you had gone onto eBay an entered a higher bid the auction would have ended anyway.

I think I'm going to take up smoking again. It must be less addictive than bidding even allowing for my strict limit on my activities.

I never look at the notifications you have been outbid, as I nearly always when I bid make my bid the max I am willing to pay , if I win good, if I'm outbid i'm not getting into a bidding war and over paying, there will always be another one along soon to bid on :)

Yes, that's the idea. Even if you're outbid by. say, £1, it doesn't follow that if you'd bid £2 more you'd have won the item.
 
I guess it's some you lose some you win. (But sometimes by pure fluke)

Yesterday I offered a stupidly low price for a BIN item. I was not surprised it got turned down. So I put in another price (tongue in cheek) and waited a response. Several hours went by so fearing they weren't interested I tried increasing my bid to that I was prepared to pay.

After another 30 minutes of trying to increase my BIN price suddenly a message tells me they have accepted my second bid. I got the item at 30% below the BIN price.

For me that's good going.

Yep more than lightly they used a snipe tool,from what I remember if the person gets caught using one they could have there account closed,it's very frustrating sometimes.
