Can this be really true? I have some Battery Drills that are newer technology and have only lasted 5-7 years. Possibly the latest ones that I bought last year may last somewhat better only time will tell. However my NiMh Locomotive Batteris do apoear to go on and on.

This is dumb. Coming from a big tramway city, overhead wires are nearly invisible among all the other clutter of the urban environment. Only places unfamiliar with trams fall for this trap.

Possibly traction batteries are better quality than those in power tools??

They will be better looked after than the average power tool as well..

I know of old glass lead-acid batteries that were 18 years old...
8 hours use, 8 hours rest, 8 hours charge..

I think it's all to do with the charging - a lot of DIY drill batteries did not have intelligent charges - I now have one with a Li-on battery and intelligent charger.

Why does everybody assume that the overhead wire issue is just about aesthetics. Is it also about maintenance of the built environment.? How do you access the external facades of buildings if they are supporting the overhead wires? While most modern high rise buildings are accessed from inside for maintenance, there's lots of medium rise left that need cranes to replace air handling units etc etc and post Grenfell, London Fire Brigade is talking of higher mobile access platforms.

Sure, there wouldn't be a problem in more urban areas (such as those Melbourne piccies) but many UK city centres are not wide, open, airy spaces

I was given a lead-acid battery which had powered a massive crystal set for at least 50yrs and it was still bouncing with energy!

The BM Metro looks rather Palymobil, to me? - Or is it just the colour scheme??
I am used to seeing the 'orrible purple things..

unfall means "accident" as in "feuer unfall notruf" - fire, accident and emergency call

Oh dear nasty and in the last day or so I think, hope nobody was seriously hurt. Though I did see mention that 31 persons were on the train or derailed coaches.

Bummer, I am due to travel on the Zillertalbahn next weekend. Looking at the news report no-one was seriously injured. It looks like it happened on a passing loop (an old factory siding at Kolbitsch I think) where the DMU was making way for the steam special. According to the report "The operation of the Zillertalbahn continued after the accident without any restrictions."
