Baldwin Lyn Whistle

Having got my Bachmann Lyn running on my railway with MyLocoSound installed, I am trying to figure out how the whistle should sound. I can't find any videos of the prototype...not too surprising as it was scrapped in 1935. The closest I can find are the Puffing Billy Baldwins down here in Victoria. They are 2-6-2s, not the 2-4-2 which is Lyn. They were built at the same time as Lyn but all the surviving locos were built in Australia, not Philadelphia, and could therefore have local whistles. There are plenty of videos of the Australian built Baldwins such as http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=034OHkZ3EKs .

Does anyone have a video link of a Balwin tank loco, built in Philadelphia around the turn of the century?

Thanks

Pure guess work, but probably the same whistle as the the other locos on the L&B. Unlike many Baldwins, Lyn had hers on the cab roof, and it was smaller than the stander Baldwin whistle on the dome, along side the safety valves. If you could get a recording of the new L&B locos, that would probably be close.

Hi Peter,

There is a Yahoo group on whistles; from there a note was posted that the Tweetsie are believed to have one on their #12. I am not a member of the group so I could not access the photos of Baldwin whistles, but they used both single chime and three chime versions.

You Tube have a video of #12 at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1eQzFphIMwk, and that will lead to to many more, and the crews like using the whistle(s), and bells as well .

#12 was built in 1917 by Baldwin for info.

I have looked in the L&B magazine , at the superb article by Steve Phillips regarding Lyn . The ex works picture taken at Baldwins shows the whistle mounted on the dome , this is how it was rebuilt on arrival at the L&B all be it with the safety valves and whistle facing to the right. It was moved to the cab roof in 1906. All pictures show a short single tube whistle, so I assume it must have sounded reasonably high pitched, unlike say a Gresley chime whistle.

When I was Captain of P.S.Canberra (1984-1990) at Echuca on the Murray River I would visit Colville Engineering at Barham/Koondrook. Apparently the Canberra had a whistle that was from one of the Puffing Billys type trains.
It was stolen one night and was replaced with a new replica with the same sound.
He actually makes steam whistles for full size traction engines and locos. He would let me borrow them to try out to see which one was the best for the vessel involved.
If he is still around you might get in contact with him to eventually hear different whistle sounds. (Single to quadruple chime whistles). A very knowledgable man. Hope this is some help.

Thanks for the reponses...very interesting. On the model, the whistle is clearly not a multiple chime (what a shame) and looks very similar to the whistles on the Puffing Billy Baldwins so I think I will adjust the MyLocoSound whistle settings to match Puffing Billy videos.

Thanks
