Thank you very much indeed. Those photos have really cleared it up. I was trying to pry the centre cap off...no wonder it wouldn't move! Do all the wheels come off the same way, or only on certain axles?

Yes, all the wheels come off the same way. From behind, push on the counterweight moulded in the front plastic cover, as FatherMcD says.
Once the wheel is off, you'll find a nylon insert with a slot to keep the wheel in the right place on the axle.
